In the days leading up to the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin, Mr. Ho Dinh Vinh and his wife in Nam Son hamlet, Tam Hop commune (Quy Hop) were almost always in the garden growing peach blossoms from morning to evening. After nearly 15 years of growing peach blossoms, Mr. Ho Dinh Vinh's garden still maintains more than 600 peach trees that are being harvested.

In the middle of the 12th lunar month, pointing to the peach trees tied with ropes to “mark”, Mr. Vinh said that there were more than 100 peach trees that had been reserved by customers, which were the trees tied with ropes. Most of the customers who had tied the ropes had transferred money, just waiting for the time near Tet to come to the garden to take the trees home.

“Of the trees that have been pre-ordered, more than half are from wholesale customers who will bring them back to Vinh city to sell. Customers will come to pick up the goods in a few days. Most of them will cut branches. Only a few customers in the district will buy the whole tree,” said Vinh.

Helping her husband take care of the flowers, "restraining" the trees from blooming early and stimulating the trees to bloom late, Ms. Tran Thi Thu said that she mainly grows the peach variety, only a few are Nhat Tan peaches. The customers who buy peaches from her family are mainly regular customers. This year, the average selling price at the garden is 500,000 - 600,000 VND/tree; some trees with many beautiful branches are priced a little higher.

“This year the weather is erratic, with more hot days than cold days, so growers must have experience to be able to adjust the plants to bloom in time for Tet and Spring. Plants that only have a few buds in mid-December are at risk of blooming late or not blooming at all, so we must promptly use the right dosage of flower stimulant. Plants with large buds that are at risk of blooming before Tet must be cared for less,” said Vinh.

With a peach garden of 600 trees, each season before Tet, Mr. Ho Dinh Vinh and his wife also have an income of more than 200 million VND.

Also in Nam Son hamlet, Ms. Tran Thi Linh's chrysanthemum garden is usually bustling with people coming and going these days. Among the chrysanthemum beds that are almost half a person's height, flower buyers choose their own "products".

Ms. Nguyen Tra Giang - a regular customer of Ms. Linh's flower garden said that every year she comes here to buy flowers to plant. She buys all colors, but her favorites are white and purple chrysanthemums.

Having been growing flowers for over 10 years, Ms. Tran Thi Linh said that her family's garden of over 4 sao is used to grow nearly 70,000 flowers, mainly chrysanthemums of all kinds. Chrysanthemums are a type of flower that can be grown all year round, and are usually sold to serve weekly and monthly worship ceremonies, with an average price of about 3,000 VND/flower.

During the Tet holiday, the number of customers buying flowers increases, so Ms. Linh mainly grows colored chrysanthemums to display on Tet. Ms. Linh confided that although growing chrysanthemums does not require high technical skills, it requires meticulousness and observation of the growth of the plants and flowers and early detection of signs of diseases that cause leaf burn and flower drop, especially on rainy and foggy days.

Chrysanthemums are dry plants and cannot tolerate waterlogging, so the soil must be high, loose, and well-drained. Therefore, on dry, sunny days, or cold, dry days, you need to pay attention to adjusting the amount of water to prevent the flowers from falling, wilting, or burning or drooping.

“In about a week, around the 20th of the lunar month, chrysanthemums will start to bloom, which is also the time when flower prices will increase by 2,000 - 3,000 VND compared to normal days at the garden. The price of a whole flower plant is about 4,500 - 5,000 VND/plant depending on the quantity purchased,” said Ms. Linh.

Nam Son Hamlet has more than 100 households, only 2 of which grow flowers, including Ms. Tran Thi Linh. "Although the income is not high, only a few tens of millions of VND per year, there is no worry about unsold goods. Growing chrysanthemums can be sold all year round. On the occasion of Tet, I often double the number of plants to meet orders, which is also a way to increase income to serve Tet shopping," said Ms. Linh.
