According to data on Forbes , 6 Vietnamese billionaires hold assets of 13.3 billion USD as of December 31, 2024, an increase of 700 million USD compared to the end of 2023, but a slight decrease compared to statistics at the end of the first quarter of 2024.
Mr. Pham Nhat Vuong continues to be the richest person in Vietnam.
The person holding the top position in the 2024 Vietnam USD billionaire ranking continues to be Mr. Pham Nhat Vuong - Chairman of Vingroup and General Director of Vinfast - with 4.1 billion USD, according to data from Forbes .
Although maintaining his position as the richest person in Vietnam and ranking 712th on the list of the richest people in the world, Mr. Vuong's net worth at the end of the year was somewhat "depleted" compared to the end of the first quarter of 2024 (4.4 billion USD).
The billionaires' assets are calculated based largely on stock value. Billionaire Vuong currently holds 691.27 million VIC shares of Vingroup, equivalent to about 18% of the group's charter capital. The rest, Mr. Vuong owns through his own companies.
In 2024, VN-Index increased by more than 12% but many Bluechip stocks were under pressure from foreign net selling pressure, such as Vingroup's VIC (-9%).
Possessing a large fortune, Mr. Vuong is focusing all his efforts and enthusiasm on making electric cars with a personal commitment of 50,000 billion VND.
Not only Vingroup's chairman, the assets of Mr. Tran Ba Duong - Chairman of Thaco's Board of Directors and Mr. Nguyen Dang Quang - Chairman of Masan Group's Board of Directors, also decreased compared to the end of last year.
At the end of 2024, billionaire Duong's assets will be 1.2 billion USD, a decrease of 300 million USD compared to the end of 2023. Mr. Quang also "lost" 300 million USD, to 1 billion USD.
On the contrary, Mr. Tran Dinh Long - Chairman of Hoa Phat Group has an additional 600 million USD compared to the end of 2023 thanks to the positive growth of HPG shares, when the market price increased by 5% in 2024.
However, as the end of the year approached, the general impact of the market, HPG code was less excited than at the beginning of the year and encountered many adjustment sessions. Because of that, at the beginning of April 2024, Mr. Long's net assets jumped to 2.6 billion USD, before falling back to 2.4 billion USD.
Vietnam aims to have 10 USD billionaires
While auto manufacturers and business owners are struggling, it seems that billionaires in the banking and aviation sectors are having a better year, if looking at the size of their net assets.
The second person in the 2024 Vietnam USD billionaire ranking is Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao - General Director of Vietjet Air, with total assets of 2.9 billion USD, an increase of 700 million USD compared to the end of 2023.
With billions of dollars in assets, Ms. Thao ranks 1,387th in the world's richest people rankings.
Similarly, Mr. Ho Hung Anh - Chairman of Techcombank also recorded an increase of 300 million USD, up to 1.8 billion USD.
According to the Government's Resolution on the action program to implement Resolution 41 of the Politburo on building and promoting the role of Vietnamese entrepreneurs in the new era, by 2030, Vietnam strives to have at least 10 billionaires and 5 most powerful entrepreneurs in Asia, according to the recently issued Resolution of the Government.
In the past, Vietnam had 7 USD billionaires (Forbes, March 2022), the most ever. Then, in the last update of 2022, Vietnam only had 6 billionaires, Mr. Bui Thanh Nhon - Chairman of Nova Group - no longer appeared on the list.
Mr. Nhon first joined the group of Vietnamese USD billionaires in early 2022 with assets of 2.9 billion USD, ranking 1,053rd in the world.
Then, when facing many difficulties in the real estate market, Novaland's NVL shares began to fall sharply, the company faced great pressure to repay debt, and Mr. Nhon was no longer a USD billionaire.
