Responding to a reporter's question requesting information related to Quang Binh fishing boats in distress at sea, Spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang said:
According to information from the authorities, on May 2 and 3, 2024, 4 fishing boats of Quang Binh province and 24 fishermen were in an accident while operating at sea. Vietnamese authorities and fishing boats have coordinated with Chinese search and rescue forces to actively search and rescue the fishermen. So far, the forces have rescued 13 fishermen, found 1 dead fisherman and are actively searching for the remaining 10 fishermen.
Immediately after receiving the information, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs discussed and worked with the Chinese Embassy in Hanoi and directed the Vietnamese Embassy in China to inform the Chinese search and rescue agency, requesting China to increase the dispatch of necessary forces and means to conduct search and rescue for the missing fishermen. Up to now, Chinese authorities have sent means to coordinate with Vietnam to support search activities.
Vietnamese authorities are continuing to closely coordinate with the Chinese side to actively search for and rescue fishermen, monitor and update the situation of the incident, and are ready to take timely citizen protection measures.
