According to a VNA correspondent at the UN, the meeting was chaired by the Swiss Foreign Minister (the country holding the UNSC presidency in May 2023) with the participation and speeches of representatives of more than 70 countries and leaders of several relevant international organizations. At the meeting, delegates expressed concern about the erosion of trust in international relations and multilateral mechanisms, increasing the risk of conflict and challenges for the international community in building and maintaining peace. In this situation, relevant countries and organizations emphasized the need to restore and strengthen trust at the global, regional and national levels for sustainable and long-lasting peace. Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN, emphasized that in the context of complex and unpredictable changes in the world, trust and dialogue are indispensable elements of multilateralism and efforts to promote peace and security. The Ambassador called on the international community, especially major countries, to act with goodwill and responsibility, comply with international law and the UN Charter, and respect the legitimate interests of all parties involved in preventing and resolving conflicts.
Regarding post-conflict peacebuilding, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang highlighted the importance of enhancing mutual understanding and trust, especially between UN peacekeeping missions and the government, people, and political and armed forces of host countries. The Ambassador also called on the international community and the UNSC to promote confidence-building measures to address the root causes of conflicts such as poverty and inequality, on the basis of enhancing transparency and inclusiveness in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and identifying trust-building as one of the key components of the UN Secretary-General's New Agenda for Peace. On this occasion, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to the element of trust in the process of building national unity, national development and international integration. This is clearly demonstrated through the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization, diversification, being a reliable partner of the international community, actively participating and contributing at multilateral forums, especially the United Nations, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and ASEAN-led mechanisms.
