As night fell, the first rain of the season poured down, making journalist Trinh Thi Thuy Trang - reporter of Kien Giang Newspaper's Electronic Newspaper Department somewhat worried when driving alone away from the industrial shrimp farming area of the people of Thuan Yen commune, Ha Tien city (Kien Giang).
Cold and hungry, the dark, deserted road became even more bumpy and it was not until 9 p.m. that Thuy Trang returned to her hotel in Ha Tien City to stay overnight until the next day to continue collecting materials for the long-running series “Sweet fruits from agricultural restructuring”. That was just one of many times journalist Thuy Trang overcame difficulties at work to carry out her journalistic work.
11 years working at Kien Giang Newspaper is also the same amount of time journalist Thuy Trang has written about agriculture and new rural development. As a reporter in charge of the district, Thuy Trang has to travel quite a lot, on average spending about 10 days each month “on each kilometer” to rural, remote and isolated areas of the province.
Journalist Thuy Trang said: “The topics I am in charge of are very broad, from cultivation, animal husbandry, everything related to agriculture, farmers, and rural areas. To reflect well, journalists must be in-depth, understand production practices as well as constantly grasp new programs and policies related to agriculture, farmers, and rural areas.”
Kien Giang is on the path of strong industrialization, but agriculture and rural areas are still a story full of concerns about economic restructuring, labor, transforming agriculture towards commodities, building new rural areas... Therefore, agriculture and rural areas are always a topic of interest, many current topics related to this field often attract the attention of readers.
Journalist Truong Mi Ni - editor of the Secretariat of Kien Giang Newspaper, guides collaborators in their work.
Journalist Truong Mi Ni - editor of the Secretariat of Kien Giang Newspaper shared: “Traffic conditions in some places in the province are still difficult, many topics require Kien Giang Newspaper reporters to spend a lot of time to carry out, sometimes having to eat and sleep at people's houses for several days in a row to collect documents, even having to drive very "super" and walk very well to collect documents, if necessary, still having to cross fields and wade through canals is a common thing. Reporters also have the ability to go hungry because there are trips through places without shops or houses. The more I travel and write, the more I love journalism.”
Coming to remote areas, Kien Giang Newspaper reporters contribute to promoting valuable experiences and ways to get rich from agriculture of "barefoot" billionaires. Beautiful images and good practices in building new rural areas of localities are brought to readers by journalists. With vivid works that breathe life, Kien Giang Newspaper also conveys the heart of farmers in producing rice, fruits, shrimp, fish... in a safe direction for community health.
Comrade Phan Kim Loan - Head of the Economic - Social Department of the Provincial Farmers' Association said: "Kien Giang Newspaper has a team of dedicated reporters who love their job and are responsible for the community, which is shown through each article. Even at times when agricultural products were "unable" to sell, Kien Giang Newspaper reporters coordinated with the Provincial Farmers' Association to write articles calling on the community to promptly rescue agricultural and seafood products, helping farmers overcome difficulties."
Kien Giang Newspaper currently has 26 reporters and editors, 100% of whom are party members, so the Party Committee regularly pays attention to political and ideological education for members, helping reporters and editors to be steadfast in ideology and politics, have absolute trust in the Party's guidelines and policies, comply with the State's policies and laws, and perform their tasks well.
From 2020-2023, more than 160 reporters and editors submitted their works to provincial, regional and central press awards, resulting in more than 70 members winning awards, most of which were written on the topic of agriculture and rural areas. Some of the award-winning works that left an impression on readers include "Kien Giang on the path of development: Perspective from agriculture", "Let fishermen go offshore and stick to the sea", "Farming in the time of climate change", "Sweet fruits from agricultural restructuring"...
