The number of students who must retake the test was announced at the conference summarizing the 2022-2023 school year and deploying key tasks for the 2023-2024 school year for primary education of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training this afternoon, August 21, at Saigon University.

According to the report data presented at the conference, in the 2022-2023 school year, a total of 5,127 primary school students in 5 grades will have to retake the summer test to be considered for promotion. This number accounts for 0.83% of the total number of primary school students in Ho Chi Minh City.

Specifically, in grade 1, the number of students who had to retake the test to be considered for promotion to the next grade was the highest with 2,531 students, accounting for 2.11%. In grade 2, 709 students had to retake the test, accounting for 0.61%.

There were 638 third graders (0.54%); 845 fourth graders had to retake the test to be considered for promotion to the next grade (0.71%) and 404 fifth graders had to retake the test, accounting for 0.29%.

The report released by the Primary Education Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training also shows that, in all 5 grades in primary school, 3,753 students scored below 5 in Vietnamese (0.57%). 2,390 students scored below 5 in math (0.36%). Meanwhile, science had the fewest students scoring below 5 (only 41 students, or 0.01%).

In the 2022-2023 school year, Ho Chi Minh City has 570 primary schools. The total number of students in the city is 661,899. Of which, the number of students studying 2 sessions/day is 498,721, accounting for 75.35%. The average number of students per class is 38.3 students/class.

Currently, District 1, District 3, District 4, District 5, District 6, District 7, District 10, Can Gio District, Nha Be District have a rate of students studying 2 sessions/day reaching 100%.

At the conference, Ms. Lam Hong Lam Thuy, Head of the Primary Education Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, requested that the education departments of districts and primary schools continue to pay attention to the quality of teaching math and Vietnamese. She requested that all education departments not chase after achievements but look back at the above figures, assess the number of students who need to be re-tested in the summer to consider moving up to the next grade in each grade, find solutions, tutor and remediate for them. Only students who do not really have enough knowledge should stay in the same grade.

Ms. Thuy also hopes that schools and teachers will continue to pay attention to the students' circumstances, help and support them, and make sure that there are no more students who are traumatized, have not received proper care, and have to retake tests during the summer... because education is equal and humane for all students...
