The 2024 admission season recorded a benchmark score of nearly 30 points for high school transcript admission in many pedagogical schools. This school year, some schools announced that they will not use high school transcripts for admission.
Ho Chi Minh City University of Education (HCMUT) said that in 2025, the school will not apply high school transcript scores in admission and will only retain the threshold conditions to ensure input quality to meet the requirements of the Ministry of Education and Training's (MOET) Admission Regulations. The four admission methods this year are expected to include direct admission according to the MOET's Regulations (10% of the quota); priority admission and admission of specialized class students (10-20% of the quota); admission based on specialized competency assessment exams - it is expected that more than 30 majors will use this method (40-50% of the quota) and admission based on the 2024 high school graduation exam (20-40% of the quota for majors with admission based on specialized competency assessment exams or 70-80% for majors without admission based on specialized competency assessment exams).
From 5 methods in 2024, now Hanoi National University of Education has only 3 methods including: Admission based on high school graduation exam scores in 2025; direct admission, priority for candidates with outstanding abilities and achievements and admission based on capacity assessment test scores - SPT in 2025.
The University of Education (Thai Nguyen University) informed about the admission methods this year including direct admission according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training; considering the results of the competency assessment test of Hanoi National University, Hanoi University of Education, Thai Nguyen University (V-SAT-TNU); considering university preparatory students; using graduation results or combining this exam score with the sports aptitude test. Compared to 2024, the school has eliminated 2 methods: considering academic records and combining academic records with aptitude test scores (Preschool Education major).
These are important changes for candidates wishing to apply for admission to the education sector. Explaining these changes, representatives of the schools said that the draft university admission regulations for 2025 of the Ministry of Education and Training require no more than 20% of the quota for early admission options, so the schools proactively stopped applying this method.
For Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, the school representative informed that from 2025, admission based on the results of the independent specialized competency assessment exam will be one of the school's main admission methods. Previously, the admission method based on academic records accounted for about 10% of the school's enrollment quota, and the admission method combining academic records with specialized competency assessment exam scores accounted for about 30 - 40% of the enrollment quota.
Speaking to Dai Doan Ket Newspaper reporter, Dr. Nguyen Mau Banh - Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Former Teachers, said that the decision to stop applying for admission based on high school transcripts of many pedagogical schools is appropriate in the current context. Because the 2018 General Education Program has many changes, candidates choose subjects according to their interests and abilities, so their high school transcript scores will be very diverse with different subject combinations. If this method is still used, it is necessary to calculate carefully to ensure fairness and create favorable conditions for students.
In addition, looking at the benchmark scores of the pedagogical majors based on the 2024 high school transcript scores, which are high and very high, with the highest major being nearly 10 points/subject, many people wonder whether there is a difference in testing and evaluation in high schools or not? To improve the quality of input, evaluation with the same common exam will be fair for all candidates.
Currently, the draft Circular amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Regulations on university and college admissions for preschool education is being developed by the Ministry of Education and Training. In seeking comments, it has issued regulations to tighten the issue of considering academic records in admissions. Specifically, the Ministry of Education and Training stipulates that if high school academic results are used for admission, the results of the entire 12th grade of the candidate must be used, instead of using the scores of 3 to 5 semesters as currently prescribed.
