VATM operates nearly 12 million flights with absolute safety

Since officially taking over the management of the southern part of the Ho Chi Minh Flight Information Region (December 8, 1994), Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) has operated nearly 12 million flights with absolute safety.


Affirming Vietnam's position in the international arena

At exactly 7:00 a.m. on December 8, 1994, the Ho Chi Minh Long-Range Air Traffic Control Center officially took over the management of the southern part of the Ho Chi Minh Flight Information Region (Ho Chi Minh FIR).

This is a particularly important event for the Vietnamese civil aviation industry, marking the maturity and remarkable development of Vietnam's civil aviation management.

Deputy Minister of Transport Le Anh Tuan affirmed that taking over the management of the southern part of the Ho Chi Minh Flight Information Region is an important milestone for the Vietnamese civil aviation industry.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Transport Le Anh Tuan assessed that the struggle to regain control of the southern part of the Ho Chi Minh Flight Information Region, which lasted more than 18 years, was a symbol of perseverance, endurance, and smooth coordination between ministries and branches.

The event of December 8, 1994 marked an important milestone not only for the Vietnamese aviation industry but also for the country, affirming Vietnam's position in the international arena.

Over the past 30 years, Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation has continuously developed, becoming a strong state-owned enterprise, with modern facilities, a team of highly qualified staff, meeting the requirements of ensuring safety and efficiency for domestic and international flight operations.

According to Deputy Minister Tuan, in 2024, VATM achieved positive results such as maintaining absolute safety for more than 1 million flights through the Ho Chi Minh City FIR area, with a flight traffic growth of over 10% compared to 2023.

At the same time, ensure the quality of flight services meets the highest standards according to the assessment of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), reaching over 91%, according to the assessment results of ICAO, ensuring a set of safety indicators in providing flight operations services.

VATM also safely operates many special flights serving the Party and State, effectively coordinating with defense agencies in monitoring, managing airspace and managing and operating flights.

Recognizing and appreciating the role and contributions of VATM in the development of both quality and quantity of the civil aviation industry in particular and the strong development of the entire transport industry, the leader of the Ministry of Transport said that the world aviation industry is facing great challenges, from the rapid growth of air transport, the requirement for high technology application, and the absolute requirement for flight safety.

With Vietnam's strategic location, especially the airspace over the East Sea, the VATM's mission is even more important.

Deputy Minister Le Anh Tuan requested that in the coming time, the Corporation continue to strengthen its capacity to monitor and manage airspace, especially the East Sea area, contributing to protecting national sovereignty and ensuring aviation security and safety.

At the same time, modernize infrastructure and apply advanced technology, continue to invest in developing smart air traffic management systems, using artificial intelligence and big data technology. Promote automation and digitalization of processes to improve operational efficiency.

Enterprises also need to develop high-quality human resources, participate more deeply in international aviation organizations and forums, strengthen cooperation with countries in the Asia-Pacific region to share experiences and enhance their position, promote sustainable development, and contribute to protecting airspace.

Optimizing capacity through airspace

Previously at the event, Mr. Le Hoang Minh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM), affirmed that the event of ICAO officially handing over the control and management of the southern part of the Ho Chi Minh Flight Information Region to Vietnam for management has important historical significance in the process of building and developing Vietnam's air traffic management, and is also an important milestone in terms of economics, technology, diplomacy and national security.

This success has affirmed the position of Vietnam's flight management industry in particular and the Vietnamese aviation industry in general in the international arena.

Over the past 30 years, VATM has gradually improved its management organization, invested in developing technical facilities and human resources, provided flight operations services with increasingly high quality and economic efficiency, and contributed more and more to the State budget.

The Corporation has ensured absolute safety for nearly 12 million flights, with total revenue reaching nearly 32 trillion VND, total flight operations revenue estimated at more than 75 trillion VND, and state budget contribution of more than 36 trillion VND.

"This result clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of economic benefits for the State budget from taking over the management of Ho Chi Minh FIR," Mr. Minh emphasized.

VATM leaders added that over the past 30 years, the process of investment and innovation in air traffic management technology has achieved many achievements with a system of equipment using advanced technology installed at 2 long-range control centers, 4 approach control centers, 22 airport control stations and dozens of information, navigation and monitoring stations.

VATM has coordinated with the aviation management agencies of neighboring countries and agencies of the Ministry of National Defense to carry out the task of ensuring aviation safety, prioritizing the application of the latest technologies in planning, designing airspace and flight methods, applying advanced flight operations methods, and managing air traffic flows to create fundamental changes in the system's capacity.

In addition, comprehensively innovate the aviation network system, flight methods based on satellite navigation methods, organize airspace, adjust and redistribute flight control zones in Ho Chi Minh FIR.

Thereby, contributing to optimizing capacity through airspace, flexibility in organizing and coordinating flight operations at the airport, contributing to reducing flight delays and aircraft waiting times, bringing economic benefits to airlines.
