Applying technology to enhance the value of Binh Phuoc cashew nuts

On July 7, the People's Committee of Binh Phuoc province coordinated with the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Vietnam Cashew Association to organize a workshop on Scientific and technological solutions to enhance the value of the cashew industry in Binh Phuoc province.

Mr. Chu Thuc Dat, Director of the Department of Local Science and Technology Development (Ministry of Science and Technology) said that recently, the Binh Phuoc cashew industry has encountered a number of difficulties that need to be resolved, such as: cashew varieties, cultivation and intensive farming processes, technologies and deeply processed products from cashew.

According to the Cashew Research and Development Center, Binh Phuoc needs to focus on transferring science and technology into production; prioritizing production and quality control of seeds, fertilizers, biotechnology, product preservation and processing. Applying safe production according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards to increase the yield and quality of cashew nuts.

Dr. Duong Thi Ngoc Diep, Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology (Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry) shared: Cashew fruit currently has a lot of development potential, can make many products such as fermented cashew juice, dried apricot, cashew jam, cashew wine, spices, natural colorants... Cashew products can be applied in many different fields such as food technology, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Thereby, it can be seen the feasibility of taking advantage of different components of cashew fruit, contributing to processing into high-value products in the direction of production without by-products.

Mr. Bach Khanh Nhut, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Cashew Association, said that by-products of cashew nuts such as cashew fruit have been researched by scientists to become soft drinks and cakes. Currently, cashew trees almost do not have to waste anything.

"I hope that through this workshop, with the support of Binh Phuoc Provincial People's Committee on policies and solutions to expand the market, in the near future the Vietnamese cashew industry will have more quality deep-processed products that are loved by consumers," Mr. Nhut shared.

Vice Chairman of Binh Phuoc Provincial People's Committee Tran Tuyet Minh emphasized that cashew processing enterprises need to strictly control the production process, ensure food safety and hygiene and quality. At the same time, promote the registration of intellectual property rights for products and gradually build and promote product brands with the indication "Binh Phuoc cashew nuts" in the market.

On the same day, the People's Committee of Binh Phuoc province coordinated with the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Vietnam Cashew Association to open the Techmart event specializing in cashew in 2023. This event gathered 85 booths of nearly 30 units, organizations and enterprises inside and outside the province to participate.
