Refereeing is an issue that worries the Indonesian U23 team as well as the media and fans of the archipelago before the third-place match of the 2024 AFC U23 Championship. Indonesian public opinion and some members of the team are not satisfied with the referee and VAR in the loss to Uzbekistan U23 a few days ago. Previously, the Indonesian Football Federation also complained to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) about the refereeing issue, claiming that the home team was unfairly treated in the opening match against Qatar U23.

“When I watch the semi-final, I still have some concerns. The players did their best, but there were situations that were decided by the referee and luck that couldn’t be changed,” coach Shin Tae-yong said at a press conference before the third-place match.

Referee and VAR decisions in the semi-final match between Indonesia U23 and Uzbekistan U23 put the Southeast Asian team at a disadvantage twice. First, Indonesia U23’s goal was ruled out for offside. Then, their captain Rizky Ridho was sent off. Both decisions were well-founded, but Indonesian fans and some members of the team did not think so.

Coach Shin Tae-yong added about the refereeing issue in the 2024 AFC U23 Championship finals: " In the future, if the AFC wants to develop, we must respect everyone, players and teams. The AFC must promote respect.

I have watched the match tape many times. I have been involved in football for more than 40 years. What I want to convey is respect for the AFC and the AFC must also respect the players in the team."

U23 Indonesia will play U23 Iraq in the third-place match of the 2024 AFC U23 Championship tomorrow (May 2). The winner of this match will qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The loser still has a chance to qualify for the Olympics through a play-off match with African representative U23 Guinea.
