To open the live show, Tung Duong chose three songs full of narrative and meaning: “Con co”, “Huyen thuy Ho Nui Coc”, “Ben dong song Cai”. His words right after the opening performance were like a word of gratitude to the audience and his artistic journey.
“Standing on stage, you see, a 'Stork' from more than ten years ago by musician Luu Ha An has now fully grown. Jokingly, to see that Tung Duong has tried very hard in more than 20 years of singing to be worthy of the trust and attention of all of you. A song that touches your heart is an extremely wonderful thing in this life, in this universe.”
Not stopping there, he further confided about his deep love for his homeland - which has become an endless source of inspiration for his creations: "I chose songs about my homeland to open the show because that is where Tung Duong is most passionate. Tung Duong's greatest love is patriotism. Just like you all sitting here, anyone who goes far away also wishes to return to contribute to and build their homeland."
Through the profound opening, Tung Duong's powerful voice seemed to bring the audience back to familiar but no less poignant memories of love for the homeland.
One of the emotional moments of the live show was a clip of Tung Duong singing “Nostalgia for Winter” as a child, which was shown on stage. He shared: “You just saw Tung Duong 27 years ago, at that time his voice had not broken yet, and he sounded as clear as Hong Nhung. If you close your eyes, you might think it was the voice of diva Hong Nhung when she was young. But later, when my voice broke, I switched to a deeper, deeper voice. Having played with Thanh Lam a lot, I inherited the inner strength and intensity in her voice. Women always had a profound influence on my youth.”
Through this sharing, the audience not only feels Tung Duong's closeness and sincerity but also clearly sees his respect for those who have contributed to shaping his unique and powerful musical style today. "Nostalgia for winter", to Tung Duong, is not only a memory of his childhood but also a milestone for his journey of maturity in both voice and soul.
Continuing the emotions, Tung Duong led the audience through a series of songs such as "My Mother" and "Father's Lie". These melodies are not only a tribute to his family but also reach the audience who have accompanied him through each step of growing up.
“Family is always the most solid support that helps us have more strength to move forward in this life. Mothers and fathers are the foundation for Tung Duong to be able to stand here and sing with all his heart.”
A special highlight of the live show is the appearance of talented young artists such as Trung Quan Idol, Soobin Hoang Son, Double 2T and Tang Duy Tan.
During the live show, Trung Quan and Tung Duong had a harmonious combination through the songs "Ngay chua dong bao" and "Trot yeu". The interplay between Trung Quan's high, clear voice and Tung Duong's deep, intense voice brought about performances that were both poignant and sublime.
Trung Quan humorously shared about the feeling of being on stage with a great artist: “When I accepted the invitation to sing with Tung Duong, I felt a lot of pressure. To the point that before the show, I lost 8kg. Singing with Tung Duong, I was 'oppressed' to the point of having nothing left. I bribed the sound guys to let go of Tung Duong's microphone, but in the end it didn't work because sometimes Tung Duong sings without a microphone!”
One of the most special highlights of the live show “The Man Who Sings” was the first performance of the song “Rebirth” – a composition written by Tang Duy Tan specifically for Tung Duong. This is not only a new song but also a testament to the connection between generations of artists, where youth and artistic depth blend to create a unique work.
The song “Rebirth” has a modern feel with a catchy yet profound melody, depicting the artist’s strong inner self. Lyrics such as: “Immersed in passionate eyes, I thought I was 20, the person who made me love passionately like my first love…” are both a praise of love and a depiction of the youthful spirit and regenerative energy that Tung Duong is aiming for at the age of 41.
Tang Duy Tan also shared the interesting story behind the composition of this song: “Mr. Tung Duong wanted me to write a song to make him feel like he was 20 again. I observed his love from childhood until now, it was a very beautiful love and I used that emotion to write this song.”
The performance of “Rebirth” on stage not only conquered the audience with Tung Duong’s emotional voice, but also with the elaborate staging with artistic lighting and illustrations. This is the perfect combination of Tang Duy Tan’s modern musical color and the inner depth that Tung Duong brings.
The appearance of Soobin Hoang Son brought a new and exciting breeze. Not only stopping at individual performances, the combination of Soobin and Tung Duong became an unexpected highlight. The duet of the two through "Gia Nhu" and "Chiec Khan Pieu" is a unique intersection between two seemingly opposite musical styles - one side is the intensity and depth of Tung Duong, the other side is the gentleness and freedom of Soobin.
During the show, Soobin also taught Tung Duong some dance moves and encouraged his senior to compete in the next season of Anh trai vu ngan cong gai because he believed that the male singer would do something special. Meanwhile, Tung Duong expressed his admiration for Soobin's family's musical tradition as well as the male singer's mindset. Before ending his performance, Soobin also performed the solo "If that day".
Double 2T's free-spirited rap brings a new vibe to the song "Phoenix Wings". The performance is not only captivating because of the harmony of vocals and rap, but also thanks to the magnificent stage set-up, with brilliant lighting and iconic visual effects.
In addition to the music, the live show also invested carefully in terms of stage and illustration. Director Xuan Truong helped realize Tung Duong's idea with modern and highly artistic stage designs.
Musician Nguyen Huu Vuong – who has been with Tung Duong for many years – also created unique arrangements, from sad ballads to vibrant compositions like “Men Don’t Need to Cry”.
“The Man Who Sings” is not only a live show but also an emotional musical journey, where Tung Duong affirms his artistic qualities through more than 20 years of dedication. With the combination of traditional values and contemporary breath, the music night brought the audience moments of sublimation and deep emotions.
The show ended with endless applause, but Tung Duong's musical journey will certainly continue, to bring memorable experiences to the audience. After the live concert in Hanoi, Tung Duong's crew will have another show on December 1 at Trung Vuong Theater, Da Nang City with guest singers Thanh Lam, Trung Quan and Sao Mai Champion 2022 - Le Minh Ngoc.
