On average, a Vietnamese consumer buys online up to 4 times/month. This shows the great potential of the online wholesale and retail market.
B2C revenue exceeds 25 billion USD
On the afternoon of December 25, in Hanoi, the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy (Ministry of Industry and Trade) in coordination with the Department of Digital Economy and Digital Society (Ministry of Information and Communications), the Vietnam E-commerce Association and related units organized a workshop on digital economic development in the Industry and Trade sector with the theme "Promoting e-commerce application and digital transformation in the wholesale and retail sector".
The workshop "Promoting e-commerce application and digital transformation in the wholesale and retail sector" attracted the attention of experts and businesses. |
Speaking at the workshop, Ms. Lai Viet Anh - Deputy Director of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy - assessed: In recent years, e-commerce in Vietnam has affirmed its pioneering role in the digital economy. Although the global and regional economies are still facing many challenges, Vietnam's e-commerce continues to maintain an impressive growth rate, reaching 18 - 25% per year. In 2024, B2C revenue will exceed 25 billion USD.
“ The wholesale and retail sector continues to play an important role in the supply chain, supporting the circulation of goods from production to consumption, creating jobs for workers and contributing to promoting economic development ,” Ms. Lai Viet Anh emphasized.
Survey data shows that on average, a Vietnamese consumer buys online up to 4 times a month. With a market of nearly 100 million people, accounting for 1.23% of the world's population, and located next to large markets such as China, India, ASEAN..., it shows that Vietnam's potential for e-commerce development is still very large.
According to statistics, Vietnam currently has 1.4 million grocery stores, nearly 9,000 traditional markets, 54,008 retail businesses and 208,995 wholesale businesses. Of these, grocery stores, traditional markets and retail businesses account for 3.91% of net production and business revenue and 3.19% of total labor; the revenue of 208,995 wholesale businesses accounts for about 27.60% and about 8.76% of total labor working in the wholesale sector.
This shows the importance of wholesale and retail in economic development and job creation for workers. Therefore, supporting the digital transformation of wholesale and retail cannot be delayed and needs to be promoted in the direction of bringing all wholesale activities, businesses, grocery stores, and retail stores from the real environment to the digital environment to reach customers on many different digital channels, bringing higher value and efficiency.
Discussing this issue, experts and digital transformation solution providers shared the same opinion that digital transformation in the retail industry is rapidly changing the way consumers shop. Online shopping, online payment and trading essential goods in the electronic environment have gradually become familiar tasks in modern life.
Strengthening digital transformation to develop digital economy
At the workshop, the Organizing Committee informed that in order to help wholesale and retail businesses promote digital transformation, in September 2024, the Ministry of Information and Communications selected Phu Nhuan District (Ho Chi Minh City) as the place to pilot the main activities of the Program to support retail stores in digital transformation.
The program's goal is to select and mobilize excellent digital platforms to participate, with preferential policies to support businesses, stores, and business households; 100% of businesses, stores, and retail businesses nationwide have access to, participate in surveys, and evaluate the level of digital transformation; 100% of businesses, stores, and retail businesses that have participated in surveys and evaluated the level of digital transformation nationwide have experienced digital platforms for digital transformation; create and update a database on digital transformation of businesses, stores, and retail businesses nationwide.
In addition to the advantages shared at the workshop, many opinions said that businesses still face many difficulties in digital transformation, such as software purchase costs, small businesses are reluctant to transform; lack of coordination with authorities, etc.
Proposing a solution to this problem, Ms. Do Nhat Uyen - Misa Company - said that it is necessary to have a clear implementation plan and roadmap; establish interdisciplinary teams between the government and suppliers to facilitate the transition process to businesses...
To overcome the difficulties that exist in the pilot units, many recommendations have been made: Enterprises supporting the implementation need to strengthen the connection between management at all levels and enterprises with local stores. At the same time, change the approach by organizing consultation and direct support at the local level, mobilize participation from local organizations, positions that directly work with the locality in each neighborhood (for example: heads of residential groups, associations...) to increase trust and confidence for business households and enterprises when participating in the experience of the program's activities...
More notable information at the workshop, after the pilot implementation period to support wholesale and retail, the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Ministry of Industry and Trade agreed to cooperate with localities and solution providers to expand implementation in 2025.
In order to expand the model to businesses and grocery stores in other provinces and cities, the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy will continue to coordinate and promote the implementation with the Ministry of Information and Communications of the tasks in Decision No. 1437/QD-TTg dated November 20, 2024 on the National Action Plan on Digital Economic Development for the period 2024-2025. |
