In the bitter cold of Hanoi, peach and kumquat sellers still have to struggle, staying up all night to tend to their trees in makeshift tents set up on the sidewalk. Many people have to light fires to keep warm while staying up all night to watch over their Tet goods outdoors.

With just over 15 days left until the Lunar New Year 2025, the entire North is experiencing an intensified cold spell, Hanoi is entering the coldest days of the year, with temperatures dropping sharply at night.

The temperature dropped to only 9 degrees Celsius, causing many difficulties for traders selling Tet ornamental plants.

According to Dan Viet Newspaper reporters, on the night of January 11 and early morning of January 12, along roads such as Vo Chi Cong, Lac Long Quan..., dozens of tents were set up for peach and kumquat sellers to rest and take turns staying up all night to look after their ornamental plants. The cold made it even harder for them to endure the whole night on the sidewalk.

Makeshift tents just big enough for 1-2 people are a temporary shelter for peach and kumquat vendors to avoid the bone-chilling cold of a Hanoi winter night.

Many people set up tarps and carefully cover the booths to both block the cold wind and ensure the safety of the ornamental plants that are blooming and bearing fruit.

Temporary tents were set up. Many traders said that this is the time to eat and sleep with ornamental plants, whether Tet is warm or not also depends on these days.

At night, they took turns napping in the small tent.

People bring extra blankets and pillows to keep out the cold.

Sitting huddled in the cold weather to look after Tet trees, Do Huu Toan (born in 2005, from Vinh Phuc - looking after Tet ornamental trees on Lac Long Quan street) said: "I was hired to look after Tet ornamental trees here, I was assigned to work in shifts from 7pm the night before to 6am the next morning and then go home to sleep. At night, it was very cold, I had to set up a tent and bring warm clothes and blankets to avoid the wind."

Mr. Tran Duc Sy (39 years old, a vendor on Lac Long Quan Street, Hanoi) who sells peach and kumquat trees shared: "I have been selling here for 5 days, today is the day I feel the coldest. Starting from 9pm onwards, the weather is very cold, the wind is howling so hard that I have to set up a tent to avoid the wind. Afraid that the strong wind will blow the tent away, I have to bring 2 more cans of water to tie to the tent."

To cope with the biting cold, many people choose to light a fire to keep warm.

Nguyen Gia Luyen (born in 2004, a peach blossom keeper) lights a fire to keep warm and avoid sleepiness on Nguyen Hoang Street. Luyen shared that he took on the job of looking after Tet peach blossoms 5 days ago. He works from 7pm the night before to 6am the next morning and then goes home to sleep. "I've been looking after peach blossoms here for almost a week now, but I often feel that the air in Hanoi is the coldest. Cold weather like this affects my health a lot, and I'm also outside, so I'm even more worried. I know it's hard, but I still have to try to earn some extra money to spend during Tet and help my family a little bit," Luyen confided.

In addition to the low night temperature making it difficult for peach and kumquat sellers to sleep, they are also worried about thieves stealing their goods.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, Hanoi will be cold from the night of January 10 to January 12. The lowest temperature in this cold air mass is commonly 9-12 degrees Celsius. With this temperature range, this is also the strongest cold air mass since the beginning of 2025.
