Previously, the nearly 600m2 garden of Mr. Ngo Dung's family (Trung Nghia village, Hoa Ninh commune, Hoa Vang district) grew a number of vegetables and fruit trees but was not effective. He was wondering what kind of tree to plant that was suitable for the soil, bringing economic efficiency to improve his life. In 2021, the Commune Farmers' Association supported Mr. Dung with 200 green-skinned grapefruit trees to develop the garden economy.

In addition, the local authorities helped him build an automatic irrigation system, provided fertilizers and trained him in growing green-skinned grapefruit. After 4 years of care, the grapefruit garden has grown well, bearing fruit twice a year, each fruit about 20cm in diameter. He sells each kilo of grapefruit for about 60,000 VND, bringing a stable income to his family.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Hoa Ninh Commune, with suitable climate and soil characteristics, the locality is suitable for green-skinned grapefruit. Therefore, from 2020 to now, the association has donated more than 5,300 grapefruit trees to many members in the area to develop the garden economy. For members in difficulty, the association supports the construction of free irrigation systems, gives fertilizers, covers grapefruit, and provides training in grapefruit growing techniques. Up to now, many households have been successful with the grapefruit growing model, bringing stable income, rising out of poverty sustainably.

Similarly, in recent years, the city's youth union organizations have regularly paid attention to and supported many fruit orchards to create livelihoods and help union members in difficult circumstances to develop the economy. A typical case is Ms. Dinh Thi Thu Thanh (Ta Lang village, Hoa Bac commune, Hoa Vang district) who was given 50 guava trees by the Hoa Vang District Youth Union in 2023. After that, Ms. Thanh rebuilt the fence, improved the soil, fertilized and planted guava on a 350m2 garden. After more than 2 years of care, the trees grew well, bearing fruit 4 times, each time from 20-25kg of guava. "Each time I harvest the fruit, I sell it for 30,000 VND/kg. I am very happy and grateful to the District Youth Union for supporting the fruit orchard to develop the economy, contributing to improving life," Ms. Thanh confided.

Recently, the Internal Political Security Department Youth Union (City Police) and other units coordinated with the Hoa Bac Commune Youth Union to present a grapefruit garden to member Dinh Minh Hoi (Ta Lang village); the City Youth Union presented 200 jackfruit, grapefruit, and longan trees to the Hoa Quy Ward Youth Union (Ngu Hanh Son district).

According to Secretary of Hoa Bac Commune Youth Union Nguyen Thi Lan, the soil characteristics are suitable for growing some fruit trees such as jackfruit, grapefruit, guava... From 2022 to now, the Commune Youth Union has donated 6 gardens with the above types of trees to union members in difficult circumstances and supported connecting output for products when harvested.

Deputy Secretary of Hoa Vang District Youth Union Nguyen Dinh Thinh said that the model of giving away "Livelihood Tree Gardens" has been maintained by the District Youth Union in recent years to create livelihoods for union members in difficult circumstances, while contributing to greening barren land and protecting the environment. Recently, the District Youth Union has given away 5 orchards, including 500 fruit trees such as mango, guava, jackfruit, grapefruit... to union members and youth in the communes of Hoa Bac, Hoa Nhon, Hoa Phong, and Hoa Son.

After being donated, the gardens have grown and developed well under the care of the union members and youths. Many of them have been harvested, bringing in significant income. The district union will continue to mobilize funding to support the livelihoods of disadvantaged youth in the area to develop the economy and stabilize their lives in the coming time.
