Ho Chi Minh City's traffic sector has completed the installation of 500 traffic lights for motorbikes to turn right on red lights at 200 intersections.
The Road Traffic Infrastructure Management Center, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, said that today (January 19) it will install 500 signal boards for motorbikes to turn right at red lights at 200 intersections.
According to the plan, the Department of Transport will install 1,900 right-turn signal lights at 524 intersections to reduce traffic congestion. The installation will be divided into two phases.
According to Mr. Do Ngoc Hai - Head of Construction Maintenance and Operation Management Department, the recent increase in traffic jams, especially in the city center, is mainly due to the high demand for travel by people for entertainment, shopping, and transporting goods at the end of the year.
In addition, the city organizes many festivals and events, so some roads are restricted, contributing to traffic congestion.
Mr. Hai said that since Decree 168 took effect, the city's traffic has had positive changes, especially in reducing violations such as running red lights and driving on sidewalks.
However, due to the nature of the central area with intersections close together, when right turns are not allowed at red lights, the line of vehicles waiting to stop is long.
To overcome this situation, the Department of Transport and the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Police have reviewed and installed right turn signals on red lights. This solution has shown initial effectiveness, reducing traffic jams at many intersections.
However, to ensure safe traffic, light timing will be closely monitored.
In addition to installing traffic lights, the Department of Transportation has been surveying to create more right turns for vehicles by reducing islands, medians or cutting down sidewalks on wide roads. This renovation requires careful inspection of infrastructure elements such as trees, water pipes and traffic spaces to ensure safety.
Mr. Hai also said that Ho Chi Minh City will apply artificial intelligence (AI) technology to flexibly operate the traffic light system at intersections such as Vo Van Kiet, Mai Chi Tho and Pham Van Dong. This can automatically adjust remotely according to the volume of vehicles, reducing congestion.
