The school separation plan was approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee after a working session with the leaders of the City Department of Education and Training on enrollment for the 2024-2025 school year.

The school began enrolling students at the junior high and high school levels from the 2000-2001 school year, and in 2002, the school was transformed into Tran Dai Nghia Specialized High School.
In recent years, in addition to the achievements of high school level, the school has organized well the educational activities of middle school level, being a resource in training and developing the quality of education in the city.
In the 2023-2024 school year, Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted (HCMC) will enroll 15 classes with 535 students in grade 6, while there are about 4,800 applications.
