Tottenham's patchwork defence of four full-backs could not withstand the pressure from Brighton, with the visitors trailing 4-0 at one point. However, Ange Postecoglou's side rallied in the final 20 minutes, scoring twice and almost pulling off a surprise. But the hosts were still the better side overall to end a three-game winless streak.
Striker Joao Pedro was the best player in the match, scoring two goals from penalties, after assisting 18-year-old midfielder Jack Hinshelwood to open the scoring. In the 11th minute, the Brazilian received the ball on the left wing, turned into the middle, and used the "la croqueta" technique to overcome pressure from three Tottenham players. In this technique, the player uses the sole of one foot to quickly flick the ball to the other foot, then the other foot flicks it forward in a zigzag pattern to pass people in a tight space. Pedro then passed to the right side of the penalty area for Hinshelwood to shoot hard into the top corner to open the scoring.
