A combination of endurance, high intensity interval training and strength training

Leading researcher in the field, Peter Krustrup, Professor of Sports and Health Sciences at the University of Southern Denmark, claims that soccer training not only improves aerobic fitness but also cardiovascular health. Soccer is an exercise that combines endurance, high-intensity interval training and strength training. Therefore, it is the optimal way to improve musculoskeletal fitness, metabolism and cardiovascular fitness, according to News Medical.

Research has shown that just two one-hour soccer sessions per week are highly effective in improving aerobic fitness and cardiovascular health. They also act as antihypertensives, while improving balance, bone strength, and preventing falls and fractures.

In fact, given the widespread popularity of football around the world, it could be argued that it is a “miracle cure” for global health, says Professor Krustrup.

Using football to prevent disease

Researchers from 12 organizations detailed the use of soccer to aid in the treatment of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, musculoskeletal disorders, obesity, high cholesterol, etc., further highlighting the value of this sport as a tool to help improve overall health.

Based on the conclusions of the report, health care systems could prescribe football as a primary prevention and treatment for cardiovascular disease, prediabetes, osteoporosis and rehabilitation for prostate cancer patients and breast cancer survivors, said co-author Dr Thomas Rostgaard Andersen, at the University of Southern Denmark.

The Danish Football Association has actively invested in a number of projects that use football to promote health. Initiatives have been launched to address health issues such as cardiovascular disease and rehabilitation for prostate cancer patients.

One of the standout studies featured in the report found that prostate cancer patients who played soccer over a one-year period had a 40 percent reduction in hospital admissions compared to those who were not physically active, according to News Medical.

This finding illustrates the potential of soccer as an essential component of modern health intervention strategies.

This study shows that soccer can be used as a preventive health care method, rehabilitative and to address mental health.
