Although both the Vietnamese men's and women's 3x3 basketball teams have not won any medals, they have left their mark and made remarkable professional progress at the tournament. This is a premise to add confidence to Vietnamese basketball in conquering the next goals in the international arena.

Many good signs

The Vietnamese women's 3x3 basketball team entered the quarterfinals of the Asian 3x3 Basketball Championship for the first time.

Vietnamese basketball has gradually integrated with the Southeast Asian region and has achieved initial success. At the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2025 held in Singapore, the Vietnamese basketball team participated with 17 members (8 athletes) with a low ranking and had to compete in the preliminary round. The Vietnamese men's team ranked 20th (out of 25 teams). The women's team ranked 19th (out of 23 teams).

In the women's category, the Vietnamese team has the core of 4 athletes including Truong Thao My, Truong Thao Vy, Nguyen Thi Tieu Duy and Bui Thi Thu Hang. In Group C, the Vietnamese women's team will face very strong opponents including Kazakhstan, Iran and Maldives. Notably, with the participation of two players of Vietnamese origin, Truong Thao My and Truong Thao Vy, the Vietnamese women's 3x3 team performed brilliantly, reaching the quarter-finals of the Asian 3x3 Basketball Championship for the first time in history.

In the qualifying round, the Vietnamese women's team excellently topped Group C when they successively defeated the opponents ranked above them: Iran (19-16), Maldives (21-8) and Kazakhstan (22-12). With high performance, the Vietnamese women's team advanced to the group stage and won an important victory against host Singapore with a score of (21-10) to qualify for the quarter-finals, before losing to Japan (10-17). In the quarter-finals, after Thao My's injury, the Vietnamese 3x3 team girls unfortunately lost (15-17) to the Chinese team and stopped at the tournament.

In the men's category, the Vietnamese men's team includes players: Dinh Thanh Tam, Tran Dang Khoa, Young Duong Justin, Christopher William Dierker. Although they lost (16-17) to Turkmenistan in the opening match, they regained their spirit and won (21-11) against New Caledonia. In the decisive match against Thailand, Dinh Thanh Tam and his teammates played brilliantly and won (21-15), earning the right to enter the group stage. In Group D, the Vietnamese team lost (15-21) to New Zealand (seed number 4) and lost (16-21) to Qatar (seed number 5), stopping at the tournament.

Sports expert Nguyen Hong Minh said that although both the Vietnamese men's and women's 3x3 basketball teams have not won any medals, they have made significant progress in their professional skills. Participating in the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2025 will give both Vietnamese teams the opportunity to compete with strong opponents in the region, thereby drawing lessons and adjusting their tactics appropriately for the 33rd SEA Games later this year in Thailand.

Synchronous development investment

Dinh Duc Manh, in charge of the basketball department, Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), said that currently, basketball is widely known in Vietnam, but in reality, this sport has not really developed strongly in the country. Compared to countries in the Southeast Asian region such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand...; Vietnamese basketball still has a large gap in terms of level. The fact that Vietnamese basketball won 2 Silver Medals in the men's and women's 3x3 events at the 31st SEA Games (2021), won the Gold Medal in women's basketball at the 32nd SEA Games (2023) and reached the quarterfinals of the 2025 Asian 3x3 Basketball Tournament... is a remarkable result, but for Vietnamese basketball to develop sustainably, there needs to be strong investment from the sport's managers and coaching staff.

Secretary General of the Hanoi Basketball Federation Dao Van Kien, in charge of the basketball section of the Volleyball - Basketball Department (Hanoi Sports Training and Competition Center), said that the progress of Vietnamese basketball in recent times is partly due to the contribution of overseas Vietnamese players. Players of Vietnamese origin are trained in developed basketball environments such as the US, Canada, Europe, etc., so they have a better physical foundation, technique and tactical thinking than domestic players. Names such as Tam Dinh, Justin Young, Khoa Tran, Chris Dierker have added strength to the Vietnamese men's team. As for the Vietnamese women's basketball team, the appearance of twin sisters Truong Thao My and Truong Thao Vy has truly brought a new breeze to the team. The appearance of overseas Vietnamese players helps increase competitiveness in the National Basketball Championship (VBA) and the national team.

Regarding this issue, according to the Head of the High Performance Sports Department (Vietnam Sports Administration) Hoang Quoc Vinh, in order to develop Vietnamese basketball in a sustainable direction to achieve high results, in the coming time, the Vietnam Sports Administration will create training conditions and increase nutrition for athletes of the Vietnam basketball team. At the same time, create conditions for athletes to compete in international tournaments, hone their skills, and improve their level. In the long term, the Administration will coordinate with the Vietnam Basketball Federation to strive to find financial resources, organize more tournaments, especially youth tournaments, increase the selection source for the national team, and aim for the international arena.
