On the morning of November 21, the rehearsal floor of Tay Do Theater - Can Tho City resounded with the sounds of singing in preparation for the final round of the Cai Luong contest "Moc Quan - Nguyen Trong Quyen" in 2023. After two semi-final nights (November 18 and 19), at Tay Do Theater, the jury selected 12 contestants with enough points to enter the final round.

Cai Luong theater fans in Can Tho City had the opportunity to watch 16 actors from troupes from the Mekong Delta provinces, including 2 actors from the Vietnam Cai Luong Theater (Hanoi) and 1 actor from Ho Chi Minh City (Tran Huu Trang Theater) compete with 19 excerpts.
Variety of genres
Of the 43 contestants who registered for this year’s competition, the jury selected 19 contestants to compete in the semi-finals. In this round, each contestant performed a cai luong excerpt, no longer than 20 minutes in length, and could invite supporting artists.
Through this screening, 12 new factors were highly appreciated by the jury in terms of singing, acting and above all, creating an impression through the art of character building, meeting the creative criteria of the competition.
Can Tho City had 4 actors competing, all 4 of them reached the final round including: Le Duy, Kim Ngan, Hai Linh, Phuong Anh (Tay Do Theater). They confidently performed their roles excellently. According to the evaluation of the jury members, all 5 actors carefully studied their roles, knew how to delve into the characters' personalities and knew how to create highlights to exploit their voices and acting styles.

Actor Le Duy entered the contest with the excerpt "Kiem tam", he put into the character's fate the feelings of an artist who had to leave the stage. The character had an accident, had to use a wheelchair, longed to continue his acting career and remembered his own mistakes, because of a moment of foolishness that led to the accident.
Le Duy's performance was very emotional, conveying to the audience his desire to conquer new creations. Acting alone without the support of a co-star has long not been actor Le Duy's strength, but he has overcome it with his constant efforts to make his role burst with emotion.

Similarly, the audience enthusiastically cheered for actor Hai Linh with the excerpt "Mien nho" (author Le Duy Hanh), when he applied dance and martial arts to the performance of the theater manager who would rather die than bend his pen and praise the invaders.
Actress Phuong Anh showed a lot of progress in her singing and acting skills, especially in playing the role of a Vietnamese historian, and brilliantly portrayed the character Nguyen Trung Truc in the excerpt "The Sound of Steel at the Execution Ground". Phuong Anh received enthusiastic cheers from the majority of the audience because of her deep inner acting, bringing many different emotions to the role.

Actress Kim Ngan in the role of Nguyen Thi Lo in the excerpt "Oan khien" is portrayed by her with full inner feelings, containing strong will and determination, not succumbing to tyranny and power. The strong feminine features make the role of Nguyen Thi Lo full of emotions, receiving sympathy from the audience, especially those thinking about the character Nguyen Trai.
Can Tho City audiences have shown much affection for two actors from the Cao Van Lau - Bac Lieu troupe, namely: actor Hoang Dung (excerpt from "A bowl of affectionate porridge") and Khanh Hoa (excerpt from "Red River").
In this talent competition, the two of them had prepared very carefully. Each performance, from the dialogue to the lyrics, was very real, making the audience forever remember the humor of Chi Pheo through Hoang Dung's performance and the hatred of the invaders that Mr. Sau hid from the revolutionary cadres until his last breath in Khanh Hoa.

Actress Kim Tuyen from An Giang Culture and Arts Center has a rustic and genuine performance through the character of Miss Dieu in the excerpt "Durian Leaves". She has a sweet voice and a simple breath that helps the role of Dieu to sublimate her emotions.
Actor Hung Vuong from Ben Tre Cai Luong Art Troupe played the role of Ho Quy Ly excellently. He clearly showed the character's heroic spirit in the excerpt "Judgement", creating surprise for the audience.

Tran Huu Trang Theater has a representative competing with actor Phung Ngoc Bay (excerpt from "Mien nho"). Vietnam Cai Luong Theater has two actresses competing: Phuong Nga ("Queen of Two Kings") and Hoa Mai ("Stone Statue Waiting for Her Husband"), causing much sympathy for audiences who love vọng cổ from the North.
Need a pedestal for talent
Through the 2023 "Moc Quan - Nguyen Trong Quyen" Cai Luong competition organized by the People's Committee of Can Tho City in coordination with the Vietnam Stage Artists Association, Can Tho City will be a gathering place for new Cai Luong talents.
After the Semi-final round, 12 excellent actors will be selected to compete in the Final night on the evening of November 29 at the Can Tho City Cultural Center Performance Hall. In the competition night to decide who will win the Gold and Silver medals, the contestants will perform a randomly drawn traditional song and take an oral test on knowledge about the life, career, and contributions of the late composer "Moc Quan - Nguyen Trong Quyen".

From 2001 to 2008, Can Tho City organized the "Moc Quan - Nguyen Trong Quyen" reformed opera contest four times, attracting hundreds of contestants.
Besides the Tran Huu Trang Award of Ho Chi Minh City, the names that have been awarded through 4 times of organization include: Ho Ngoc Trinh, Giang Bich Phuong, Vo Minh Lam, Le Minh Hao, Thu Van... up to today have created many artistic achievements. In addition, there are also contestants who have participated such as: Lich Su, Hoang Khanh, Ngoc Huyen... who are still the core nuclei of the Cai Luong stage in the Mekong Delta.
Experts are interested in the event of raising the national level of the "Moc Quan - Nguyen Trong Quyen" Cai Luong competition since this year, in order to discover new talents for Cai Luong stages in the southern provinces. Through the competition, it is expected that young actors will be equipped with in-depth knowledge to grasp new skills in creating roles.

Overall, the quality of the two semi-final nights was not outstanding. Some actors submitted their performances too hastily, so their performances were amateurish. Some provinces sent contestants but returned empty-handed, such as Long An, Ca Mau (Huong Tram), and Hau Giang.
Viewers expect this playground to be a midwife for the actors after winning the award to stick with Can Tho City. Every quarter after winning the award, they will meet in each province according to the art program model "9 rivers dating", to bring new creativity to the stage, creating a wide spread towards more beautiful national art values.
