Tien Yen: Increasing the value of native chicken breeds

Tien Yen District's Department of Agriculture determined that in 2025, it will continue to focus on developing Tien Yen chicken flocks to increase productivity, increase income for people, and manage product quality well.   Thereby, contributing to the successful implementation   Project   Restructuring the agricultural sector associated with new rural construction, developing OCOP products and eco-tourism in Tien Yen district for the period 2020-2025, with a vision to 2030.

The scale of Tien Yen chicken flock in Ha Lau commune increases every year, helping to increase income and improve people's lives.

In 2024, the Tien Yen chicken flock will reach 1.36 million (an increase of 6.3% over the same period in 2023); the output of fresh meat will reach 6,400 tons (an increase of 7.4% over the same period). In order to expand the scale and increase the value of this chicken breed, in recent years, the district has actively developed livestock farming with policies to support breeds, loan interest rates, promote advertising activities, and promote product consumption... In particular, the District Farmers' Association joins hands with farmers in promoting the application of science and technology in livestock farming.

Identifying the feed ration as an important factor in improving the quality of Tien Yen chicken products when they are brought to the market, since March 2021, Tien Yen District People's Committee has approved the grassroots science and technology task "Application of self-mixed feed rations from available raw materials to improve meat quality and efficiency of raising commercial Tien Yen chickens". At the end of December 2024, the project was appraised by Tien Yen District People's Committee and the research team of Vietnam Academy of Agriculture, highly appreciated for its feasibility and the possibility of replicating the model. The testing process showed that adding a mixture of herbs such as single needle, star anise, and cinnamon to the diet improved the growth ability of the chicken flock. The chicken flock also had better disease resistance, less respiratory and digestive diseases. The chicken not only improved meat quality, reduced fat but also retained the characteristic aroma of Tien Yen chicken. At the same time, chicken farmers also significantly reduced costs on antibiotics and treatment.

According to Mr. Ly Van Dien, Chairman of Tien Yen District Farmers' Association, the experimental raising of Tien Yen herbal chickens has given good results and can be expanded. Recently, the District Farmers' Association has proactively cooperated with people in Dong Ngu commune to build the first Tien Yen herbal chicken raising model in the district, initially supplying chickens according to customer orders.

Tien Yen District People's Committee also coordinated with Vietnam Academy of Agriculture to carry out the research project "Completing and applying the chicken product processing process for Tien Yen chicken". After nearly 1 year of implementation, the implementation team has researched and basically completed the processing process of Tien Yen chicken products, including: Chicken marinated with salt and pepper, chicken marinated with herbs, chicken marinated with smoked soy sauce..., opening up opportunities to bring Tien Yen chicken closer to consumers in and outside the province.

Aiming for the goal of the total number of commercial chickens sold in the district reaching 1.5 million in 2025, Tien Yen district also ensures to maintain and develop the scale of breeding production of Tien Yen chicken breeding facilities in the district, with a scale of 8,000-10,000 parent chickens, producing 800,000 - 1 million Tien Yen chicken breeds/year; breeding production among the people maintains 18,000 breeding chickens at small-scale households to be self-sufficient in breeding production for family farming.

Mr. La Van Vy, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ha Lau Commune (Tien Yen District) said: In 2024, the commune's chicken flock will be 150,000. The locality aims to increase it to about 160,000. The commune focuses on leading, directing, and strengthening trade promotion activities to introduce products to help people consume quickly; calling for investment to modernize and expand the scale of livestock farming. Developing a farmers' association "Raising 10,000 commercial Tien Yen chickens/year"; organizing for people to study at experienced livestock farms; applying project results and research projects to livestock farming activities of each household and facility in the area.

Recently, the Provincial People's Committee approved a project on preserving Tien Yen chicken genetic resources with a total estimated cost of more than 7.2 billion VND, with an implementation period of 36 months. The project's contents include: Additional investigation, assessment of the current status of Tien Yen chicken genetic resources and breeding situation; selection of Tien Yen chicken nucleus flocks of male line; selection of Tien Yen chicken nucleus flocks of female line; completion of Tien Yen chicken breeding process, both reproductive and commercial types; conferences, training, coaching, technology transfer, etc.

Ms. Do Thi Duyen, Head of the Tien Yen District Agriculture Department, said: In the coming time, the association at all levels will organize propaganda, popularize policies, and mobilize organizations to participate in building the Tien Yen chicken production value chain project; build geographical indications for Tien Yen chickens, and move towards granting geographical indications for Tien Yen chicken products to establishments producing and trading Tien Yen chicken breeds and commercial Tien Yen chickens in the district. Along with that, promptly detect, strictly handle, and revoke the right to use the geographical indication of Tien Yen chicken of organizations, individuals, and households that violate the regulations on management and use of geographical indications for Tien Yen chicken products; support the building of a collective brand for the Tien Yen chicken breeding cooperative in Phong Du commune.
