Billionaire Musk made the announcement at an event in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on the evening of October 19 (US time), according to WPMI-TV.
“I have a surprise for you. We will randomly give away $1 million to someone who signs the petition, every day from now until Election Day,” Musk announced.
Billionaire Elon Musk speaks at an event in Oaks, Pennsylvania (USA) on October 18.
The winner at the Harrisburg town hall event was John Dreher, who described himself as a “huge fan” of Musk. After presenting Dreher with a $1 million check, Musk stressed that all he asked was that Dreher continue to be the spokesperson for the petition.
The petition that Mr. Musk asked people to sign reads: "The First and Second Amendments guarantee freedom of speech and the right to bear arms. By signing below, I pledge my support for the First and Second Amendments."
The amount is the latest example of billionaire Musk using his vast fortune to influence the tense presidential race between Republican presidential candidate, former US President Donald Trump and Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris.
Mr Musk has formed a political action group called America PAC to support Mr Trump’s presidential campaign. America PAC is helping to mobilize and register voters in battleground states, but there are signs that the group is struggling to achieve its goals, according to Reuters.
Attendees at the Harrisburg event on October 19 were required to sign the petition, allowing America PAC to collect contact information for more potential voters whom it could mobilize to vote for Mr. Trump.
Mr Musk, ranked by Forbes magazine as the world's richest person, has so far given at least $75 million to America PAC, making the organization a key part of Mr Trump's bid to return to the White House, according to Reuters.
