South Korea begins production of Cheongung II system for export to Saudi Arabia

According to information from the Center for Global Arms Market Information (CAWAT), Korean manufacturer Hanwha Aerospace has signed a contract with LIG Nex1 for a total amount of 940 billion Won (642 million USD) to supply components for the M-SAM Block 2 (Cheongung II) medium-range air defense system ordered by Saudi Arabia.

Hanwha Aerospace said that under the terms of the agreement, the unit will provide the LIG Nex1 launcher and other components for the Cheongung-II system. The delivery is being made under a $3.2 billion contract signed by LIG Nex1 to supply the M-SAM Block 2 air defense system to Riyadh.

LIG Nex1 is responsible for missile production and integration of all systems. Hanwha Systems is the multi-function radar supplier and Hanwha Aerospace is the launcher supplier.

South Korea's LIG Nex1 has signed a contract to supply the M-SAM Blok.2 medium-range air defense system to the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Defense in November 2023. The order is worth $3.2 billion. The decision to disclose the purchase data came after the defense ministers of the two countries held talks on February 4, 2024, on strengthening ties in the field of arms supply on the sidelines of the World Defense Exhibition in Riyadh.

The Cheongung II air defense system is designed to destroy not only enemy attack aircraft at ranges of up to 40km, but also ballistic missiles. The complex's interceptor missiles are capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 5 and destroying ballistic missiles with a direct hit at altitudes of up to 20km.

Each battery of the M-SAM Block 2 air defense system includes a multifunctional X-band radar, from 4 to 8 vertical launchers with 8 missiles each, a combat command center as well as transport and support vehicles.

Russia tests remote-controlled version of Konkurs-M anti-tank missile system

Russia's Kalashnikov Concern has released images of remote control equipment tests of the Konkurs-M anti-tank missile (ATGM) system.

The video released by Kalashnikov shows the installation of additional equipment on the ATGM launcher and the operator's work on the remote control, which is carried out in the form of a module. The remote control system includes keys for controlling the missile's flight path and a display of the gunner's sight.

The device can be set up and commissioned in less than 20 minutes. With the built-in battery, the remote control can operate continuously for 8 hours. The weight of the remote control is approximately 10 kg. The new device allows the crew to operate the AGTM Konkurs-M from a safe hiding position.

The Konkurs-M ATGM missile is equipped with a 2.7 kg chemical warhead, which can penetrate 750-800 mm thick steel armor at a 90 degree angle. This complex is capable of attacking many types of armored vehicles, firing points and enemy hiding places.

In October 2017, Russia's Central Research Institute of Precision Engineering began production of the 1P45-1 remote-controlled aiming and monitoring device for the AGTM Kornet system, which is the next generation of Konkurs-M anti-tank missiles.

Sweden puts into service new anti-ship missiles

Saab announced the signing of a contract with the Swedish Armed Forces Logistics Agency (FMV) to modernize its coastal defense missile systems. The total value of the order is SEK 800 million. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2026.

The contract includes the supply of Saab RBS-15 Mk.3 anti-ship missiles, integrated with launcher modules mounted on civilian transport vehicle chassis.

The previous version of the RBS-15, the RBS-15 Mk.2, is in service with the Swedish Armed Forces. The coastal defence missile systems were reintroduced to the Swedish Armed Forces in 2016 with the main difference being a dedicated launcher chassis.

Saab Dynamics division head Gergen Johansson said Sweden's defence capabilities will be significantly enhanced after receiving the anti-ship missile with a longer range, improved guidance sensors and a heavier warhead. The RBS-15 is specially designed to operate in the harsh environment and weather conditions of the Baltic Sea.

The RBS-15 Mk.3 missile, developed by Saab Bofors Dynamics, weighs 635 kg (800 kg with a solid-fuel booster) and is designed to destroy ground and sea targets in adverse weather conditions at a range of more than 200 km. The missile is equipped with a new Microturbo TRI 60-5 turbojet engine with a thrust of 4.4 kN and is capable of reaching subsonic speeds of Mach 0.9.

The anti-ship missile family can be integrated on missile boats, corvettes, destroyers, as well as fixed and mobile coastal defense systems. The system is developed and produced by Saab together with German partner Diehl Defense.
