On the morning of June 27, in Phu Quoc City, Kien Giang Province, the Party Committee of Naval Region 5 held a conference to review 10 years of implementing Resolution No. 689 of the Central Military Commission and Resolution No. 11 of the Navy Party Committee on preventing, combating, overcoming consequences of natural disasters, catastrophes, and search and rescue until 2020 and the following years. Rear Admiral Nguyen Huu Thoan, Secretary of the Party Committee and Political Commissar of the Region chaired the conference.

Over the past ten years, the Party Committee and Command of Naval Region 5 have led and directed agencies and units to effectively implement Resolution No. 689 of the Central Military Commission and Resolution No. 11 of the Navy Party Committee.
Notably, the Region has done a good job of propaganda and education to raise awareness, responsibility, and skills for officers, soldiers, and people in the area on measures to prevent and respond to incidents, natural disasters, catastrophes, and rescue; develop plans to prevent and combat natural disasters, epidemics, search and rescue, rescue from collapses, prevent and combat fires, and forest fires strictly, seriously, and closely following the actual situation and tasks of the unit.

The region regularly practices response plans for incidents, natural disasters, search and rescue; proactively coordinates and cooperates closely with local Party committees, authorities, agencies and units in the area in responding to incidents, natural disasters, catastrophes, search and rescue; invests, purchases, receives, manages and effectively uses means and equipment serving the work of preventing, combating and overcoming the consequences of natural disasters and epidemics, etc.
Over the past 10 years, the Command of Region 5 has mobilized 9,282 officers and soldiers, 145 vehicles to participate in firefighting and rescue in 146 cases. Officers and soldiers of the Region have not been afraid of difficulties, dangers, big waves, strong winds, promptly extinguished more than 200 hectares of forest, dozens of houses were on fire; rescued 43 fishermen, 55 vehicles in distress at sea. Thereby, contributing to minimizing damage to the lives and property of the State and people in the stationed area.

Speaking at the Conference, Rear Admiral Nguyen Huu Thoan acknowledged and commended the work of preventing, combating, overcoming the consequences of natural disasters, and search and rescue of officers and soldiers of the Region in the past time, and at the same time noted that Party committees and commanders at all levels need to continue to thoroughly grasp and implement Resolution No. 689 of the Central Military Commission and Resolution No. 11 of the Navy Party Committee on preventing, combating, overcoming the consequences of natural disasters, catastrophes, and search and rescue.

Units proactively prepare human resources, means, logistics and technical materials; closely coordinate and cooperate with functional agencies, local authorities, and forces stationed in the area to effectively respond to incidents, natural disasters, fires, etc. to prevent unsafety in all activities; promptly propose superiors to commend and reward collectives and individuals with outstanding achievements in performing tasks of natural disaster prevention, control, and rescue, contributing to encouraging and motivating officers and soldiers to successfully complete assigned tasks.
