The South China Sea dispute, the Myanmar crisis and intra-ASEAN trade were the topics discussed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah during their meeting at Istana Nurul Iman (Brunei) on February 18.

According to Thai PBS newspaper, posted on his personal Facebook, Prime Minister Anwar said that the discussion was attended by the advisory group for Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship, headed by former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
On the issue of Myanmar, the parties discussed the best way forward to a positive roadmap to resolve the crisis and informed all ASEAN foreign ministers.
The Malaysian Prime Minister pointed out: "The view is that while adhering to the five-point consensus, no effort should be spared to continue the engagement process with all stakeholders."
The meeting also expressed concern about the thriving illicit economy fueled by drug trafficking, human trafficking and fraudulent activities, which have made the problems increasingly difficult to solve.
Regarding the East Sea dispute, according to Mr. Anwar, the parties agreed that there needs to be more multilateral diplomatic progress with the hope of soon completing negotiations on the Code of Conduct (CoC).
In addition, Prime Minister Anwar added, the meeting focused substantially on discussing “how best to enhance intra-ASEAN trade and promote greater economic cooperation, including the urgent need for an effective and business-friendly legal framework.”
The meeting also discussed the importance of establishing appropriate Blockchain infrastructure and enabling digital accessibility as a prerequisite for the healthy and progressive development of the region.
