Domestication of rare fish
For generations, the ethnic minorities here have only used fishing and nets to catch fish and protect the river; however, in recent years, people from everywhere have come here to hunt fish in an extermination manner, and the rare fish species in the river have gradually become scarce. To preserve the rare fish species, some people have domesticated and raised them in still water ponds and have been successful.
Since childhood, following his father to catch fish on the Serepok River, Mr. Y Han Bkrong in Krong Na Commune, Buon Don District, Dak Lak Province clearly understood the characteristics of each species of fish in the river.
Mr. Y Han said: Red-tailed catfish only live in deep rivers, where the water flows fast and there are many rapids. In the past, there were countless fish species on this river, especially catfish, many of which weighed nearly a hundred kilograms. Once I caught a catfish as big as a tree stump. After butchering the fish, I held a ceremony to worship Yang (god), then cut the fish into pieces and distributed them to everyone in the village.
Ethnic minorities here catch fish in the usual way to protect the river such as casting nets, throwing spears or fishing; however, in recent years, many people from other places have come to hunt fish, fishing in an destructive way, along with that the water environment in the river has changed, the number of catfish has gradually decreased, even at risk of extinction.
Living along the Serepok River, witnessing many changes of the river, some people in Hoa Phu commune have brought red-tailed catfish to raise in still water ponds.
Mr. Huynh Quoc Bai (born in 1964), residing in Hamlet 5, Hoa Phu Commune, Buon Ma Thuot City, is one of the first people to domesticate the "sea monster" on this river. He bought fish fry from fishermen, then brought them home to release into the pond to raise. After a period of monitoring, he was happy when the fish grew well.
“At first, the fish were just adapting to the environment so they grew slowly, but in the second year, when they got used to the pond environment, the fish grew strongly, each fish reaching 2-3kg. What I have experienced is that red-tailed catfish are very easy to raise, resistant to disease, and suitable for the local climate. The fish are omnivorous, mainly eating small animals such as intestines, shrimp, crabs, etc. My family often buys chicken and pork intestines to cook for the fish to increase the amount of protein,” Mr. Bai shared.
With many years of experience, Mr. Bai's family has gradually expanded the area of the catfish pond. Each batch of fish he raises lasts about 2 years, weighing from 3kg or more. Each year, his family harvests 600 - 700 kg of red-tailed catfish, selling for 320,000 - 350,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, each year his family earns a profit of more than 200 million VND.
Enhancing the value of specialty fish
From the initial success in taming this precious fish species, many households in Hoa Phu commune boldly invested, raising red-tailed catfish as the main livestock in ponds and lakes, bringing high economic efficiency.
In 2021, Hoa Phu Xanh Agricultural Service Cooperative was established, in which many households raising red-tailed catfish participated in the association. By joining the association with the Cooperative, farmers have favorable conditions to exchange experiences, promote red-tailed catfish products and have stable output.
Typically, from investing in raising red-tailed catfish in 2021, up to now, the family of Mr. Le Van Kien (born in 1985), residing in village 5, Hoa Phu commune, has had 5 ponds, with an area of 1.5 hectares and has become the household with the largest catfish farming pond area in the commune.
Mr. Kien said: To ensure favorable conditions for fish growth, in addition to providing adequate food, I designed a pipeline system to maintain a regular flow of water in and out of the pond. Because the deeper the water in the pond, the more suitable it is for catfish, the fish will grow faster, so I always keep the water level in the pond stable all year round.
In 2022, his family started harvesting red-tailed catfish for sale. From 2024 to now, his family has sold more than 300 red-tailed catfish, with a total output of more than 1 ton. With such a fish harvest, his family earns nearly 300 million VND annually.
In the past, local fishermen still cast nets to catch fish in the river, including red-tailed catfish, to sell to fish-raising households. However, due to the impact of the water environment and fish exploitation, the amount of natural red-tailed catfish is very small.
Chairman of Hoa Phu Commune People's Committee Nguyen Huu Toan said: In addition to traditional fishing activities on the Serepok River, in the commune there are about 10 households who have boldly invested in ponds, with a total area of over 10 hectares, to raise red-tailed catfish. These households buy fish from people who catch fish naturally on the river and tame them in still water. The red-tailed catfish farming model not only contributes to job creation and improving lives, but also brings high economic efficiency to many households and contributes to promoting local economic development.
To enhance the value of the precious fish species of the Serepok River, two enterprises in the commune have invested in a technological line to process products from red-tailed catfish. One of them has registered for 3-star OCOP and will be recognized in 2024. Hoa Phu commune has also signed a contract with an enterprise in Hoa Khanh commune (Buon Ma Thuot city), supporting red-tailed catfish breeds for 6 households participating in the product value chain associated with community tourism.
Currently, the commune has built a model of linking agricultural production according to the value chain, combining community-based tourism experiences. The model is applied to Hoa Phu Xanh Agricultural Service Cooperative, aiming to create quality products and attract tourists to the locality.
