Ha Khai Minh (1984) was born and raised in Guangdong (China). Since primary school, he has been interested in computers. In addition, he also has a passion for reading English technology magazines. In high school, Khai Minh won first prize in the Guangdong Provincial Chemistry Competition . In high school, he continued to top the National Physics Competition .
Taking the university entrance exam in 2003, Khai Minh achieved a perfect score of 900/900. This achievement helped him become the top student in the country and enter Tsinghua University, majoring in Computer Science. During his 4 years of studying there, Khai Minh won a scholarship for 3 years thanks to his excellent scores.
As a third-year student, he had the opportunity to intern at Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA), headquartered in Beijing (China). Here, he participated in research with the Visual Computing group.
Graduated from university in 2007, he was directly admitted to study for a PhD at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (China). Under the guidance of Professor Tang Xiao Ou, in 2009, Khai Minh became the first person in China to win the Best Paper Award at the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR), with his proposal of an Image Deblurring Algorithm .
In 2011, after graduating with a PhD in Information Technology, Khai Minh officially joined Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA). In 2015, he and his research team surpassed competitors such as Google, Intel and Qualcomm to win the ImageNet Image Recognition Competition (ICCV) with the 152-layer residual network model design (ResNet-152) .
Successful with the ResNet-152 network model, 1 year later, Khai Minh continued to receive the Best Research Paper Award at the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR). With the above achievements, Dr. Khai Minh is recognized as a talented artificial intelligence researcher.
After 5 years working at Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA), in August 2016, Khai Minh quit his job to join Facebook AI Research (FAIR). A chief artificial intelligence engineer at Google, commented that Dr. Khai Minh's ability would be at level E9. With this level, his annual income would be more than 1 million USD (24 billion VND).
Another engineer working in the computer hardware field in the US said that Khai Minh has a great academic reputation, so the entry level is relatively high. "After working at Meta for nearly 8 years, Khai Minh has basically achieved many achievements and financial freedom."
Another senior algorithm expert at Alibaba shared that it would be a wise choice for Khai Minh to participate in purely academic research work at present. "A great master like him entering the academic world to focus on research will certainly make many contributions to humanity," this person commented.
Dr. Khai Minh's independent research at Facebook AI Research (FAIR) has achieved many important achievements. Among them, we must mention the research on High-Performance Object Detection Algorithm (Mask R-CNN) by Khai Minh. The algorithm solves the problem of segmenting objects at the individual level in images.
This research result helped him receive the Best Paper Award for the third time at the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) in 2018. According to Professor Thang Hieu Au, Khai Minh is the first researcher in the world to win the award at CVPR three times and the award at ICCV once, in less than 10 years, after graduating with a PhD.
As the person who guided Dr. Khai Minh on his academic path from the very beginning, in July 2023, at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference held in Shanghai (China), Professor Thang Hieu Au frankly acknowledged the value of his student's research works in recent times.
To date, Khai Minh has published 73 articles in the world's leading journals on artificial intelligence. The total number of academic citations of these articles has exceeded 460,000 and continues to increase by 100,000/year. This shows the influence of the articles. In the leading international journal IEEE alone, Dr. Khai Minh has 13 articles.
After a series of groundbreaking contributions in the field of artificial intelligence, in 2022, Dr. Khai Minh topped the list of the most influential researchers in the world. In August 2023, the doctor was honored to receive the Future Science Award in Mathematics and Computer Science worth 330,000 USD (8.3 billion VND).
As the winner of the Science of the Future Award, in October 2023, he gave a speech on the Impact of Deep Networks in Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing, as well as the Future Development Potential of Artificial Intelligence, at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (China).
His tireless efforts were rewarded. In February 2024, Dr. Khai Minh officially joined the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as an associate professor.
According to experts in the field of artificial intelligence, Khai Minh is a genius. Jin Fan - a scientist researching artificial intelligence at NVIDIA, said: "We should congratulate MIT for recruiting Khai Minh". Many people expect that he will continue to make breakthroughs at the school in the future.
