The Department of Disease Prevention, Ministry of Health has just informed about cases of unknown causes of illness in Russia in recent days.

Specifically, on March 31, 2025, a number of foreign electronic news sites reported cases of unknown illness in humans in Russia.

Initially, the patient showed symptoms such as fatigue, body aches, and weakness similar to common seasonal illnesses. After a few days (3-4 days), symptoms of high fever (39 degrees Celsius), severe cough with tears and bloody sputum, fatigue, and bedridden appeared.

Many patients tested negative for COVID-19 and influenza, with no new pathogens identified.

After receiving the above information, the Department of Disease Prevention contacted the World Health Organization in Vietnam to verify and clarify the information. Up to now, according to initial information from the Focal Point for the implementation of the International Health Regulations (IHR) of the World Health Organization in the European region, some cases of the disease have been identified as caused by Mycoplasma infection.

The World Health Organization is in contact with health authorities in the Russian Federation for further clarification.

Mycoplasma bacteria cause respiratory infections that damage the lining of the respiratory tract (including the throat, trachea, and lungs). The disease is transmitted from person to person through small droplets containing bacteria when coughing or sneezing. The disease can be treated with antibiotics.

Based on information recorded from the event-based surveillance system, the Department of Disease Prevention said it will continue to closely monitor the developments of the epidemic situation; closely coordinate with the World Health Organization, the focal point for implementing IHR of the Russian Federation to update information and proactively provide and share complete and accurate information.

At the same time, the Department of Disease Prevention also recommends that people not be subjective or negligent in the face of developments in the epidemic situation, especially during the current transitional season with favorable weather conditions for respiratory pathogens to spread.
