Complications after breast augmentation filler injection

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hong Ha, Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery - Aesthetics, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, the hospital recently treated a 19-year-old female patient from Hoa Binh who had an accident after receiving filler injections for breast augmentation.

Sharing with the doctor, this patient said that after giving birth to her first child, her breasts had shrunk significantly. Believing in the advertisements of non-surgical breast augmentation spas, the patient was advised to inject fillers into her breasts.

However, after the injection, she began to experience symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, and then chills. Although there were no brain complications, the patient had pain and swelling and many lumps in her chest, accompanied by hot swelling and fever.

Dr. Ha said that in this case, the patient was only 19 years old and wanted to have children in the future, but due to infection from the filler, if she had to have both breasts removed, this would be a very serious and painful complication for the woman. This posed a difficult question for Plastic Surgeons: How to remove as much of this infected filler from the woman's body as possible without affecting her function and ability to raise children with the most aesthetic surgical approach.

At the hospital, doctors used modern endoscopic surgery combined with a multi-plane color ultrasound system during cesarean section to remove most of the lumpy fillers from the patient's chest, with just a small incision, optimizing aesthetics and causing little impact on the mammary glands. Doctors applied advanced techniques to retain the function of the mammary glands, helping the patient to continue being a mother and producing milk for her child in the future.

One week after the patient's breast revision surgery, the ultrasound results showed that the fillers had been almost completely removed from the breasts. The incision was small, dry, only a few centimeters long, and the function of the mammary glands was preserved almost to the maximum.

The Ministry of Health does not license breast augmentation filler injections.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hong Ha warns: Filler injection, also known as breast augmentation, is an unauthorized practice according to the regulations of the Ministry of Health. Previously, some people injected liquid silicone into their breasts, but this substance has long been banned. Currently, some smuggled and unlicensed products such as artificial fat are being injected into the body. These substances are of unknown origin and unsafe, especially when injected into the mammary glands, a tissue that secretes milk and has a high risk of causing cancer.

Injecting substances of unknown origin into the chest can cause many dangerous complications. Immediately, a blood vessel blockage may occur, the injected substance can move to the brain or lungs and cause a blockage in these organs. This is rare but very dangerous, and can threaten the patient's life. In addition, injecting substances of unknown origin at unlicensed facilities also increases the risk of infection. Many patients after injecting fillers at spas of unknown origin often have fever, chills, infection or pus discharge from the injection site.

In some cases, the infection can persist and cause painful swelling, lumps, or even pus to drain from the breast through fistulas. These conditions can be long-lasting and difficult to treat. Many patients require long-term hospital treatment, or even complete mastectomy.

"Before deciding to increase breast size, you should learn carefully about safe and effective methods. Methods recognized by the Ministry of Health and world medicine include surgical breast augmentation, especially endoscopic breast implant placement through the armpit. This is a method that has been proven to be safe and effective in improving breast shape. Thanks to advanced endoscopic techniques, patients will have very little pain after surgery, recover quickly with aesthetic results without any scars or blemishes on the breasts," Dr. Ha emphasized.
