16-year-old boy loses left hand after homemade firecracker explodes

A 16-year-old boy in Quang Binh lost his left hand when a homemade firecracker exploded.

On March 24, the Vietnam - Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi (Quang Binh) said that the hospital's doctors had just received a 16-year-old boy with multiple injuries caused by homemade fireworks.

The patient's name is NHL, born in 2009, residing in Tuyen Hoa district.

Initial examination revealed that the patient had lost his left hand and his right hand was partially crushed. There were many open wounds on his face, abdomen, and legs. X-rays revealed that the patient’s internal organs had been damaged by many foreign objects.

The patient's family said that L. was hit by a homemade firecracker while pouring explosives into a metal can. After receiving first aid at a lower-level medical facility, L. was taken to the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi for surgery.

Doctors performed surgery to create a stump on the left hand and treated the wound on the right hand, removed foreign objects, and sutured the torn internal organs.

After surgery, the patient is out of danger and is currently recovering.

It is known that this is not the first time an accident has occurred with homemade fireworks in Quang Binh.

Previously, at the end of 2024, 4 students living in Truong Son commune, Quang Ninh district, Quang Binh province also had an accident with homemade fireworks.

The children were hospitalized in a state of severe burns, with swelling of the entire face, forearms, hands, and legs, with burns covering 10-20% of the body.

Local authorities have issued many warnings, but some teenagers still order materials from social networks to make explosive fireworks and unfortunate accidents occur.
