Coming to Vinh Phuc General Hospital for examination due to hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, occasional difficulty breathing, and an abnormally large neck, Mr. D.TT (24 years old), residing in Duc Bac, Song Lo, was unexpectedly diagnosed with thyroid cancer with metastasis to the neck lymph nodes and needed surgery to remove the tumor immediately.

Upon admission, the doctors quickly performed the necessary blood tests, thyroid ultrasound, MRI and tumor biopsy. The results showed that the patient had papillary thyroid cancer - the most common type of thyroid cancer.

After being consulted and explained the surgical and treatment methods, the doctors performed a total thyroidectomy combined with bilateral neck lymph node dissection. The doctor said that the patient's thyroid tumor was quite large, had deformed morphology, had many nodules, the largest nodule was 2cm in size, compressing and narrowing the trachea; in addition, there were many metastatic lymph nodes around the neck, the largest measuring up to 5cm.

After surgery, Mr. D.TT continued to be monitored and treated according to the protocol. Currently, the patient has recovered his health, is eating normally, and has overcome the difficulty swallowing and hoarseness.

In the coming time, the patient will be given special drugs to compensate for the missing hormones. In case cancer cells still remain, the patient will be given radiation therapy until the cancer is completely eradicated.

Sharing about this case, Dr. Hieu said: “DT’s case is a case of a young patient with thyroid cancer who came to the hospital late when he already had symptoms of airway compression. The tumor was large and had metastasized to the lymph nodes, making the surgery more difficult and increasing the risk of post-operative complications.

Therefore, for the best prevention, we should regularly go for periodic health check-ups and thyroid ultrasounds every 6-12 months. If a small thyroid tumor appears, the patient needs to continue monitoring. If a biopsy is indicated, it should be performed to detect early and treat promptly, preventing the risk of developing into cancer and lymph node metastasis.

According to doctors, if thyroid cancer is detected early, radical surgery combined with iodine 131 treatment and conventional endocrine therapy, the prognosis after surgery is very good, and a complete cure is possible.
