These days, Mr. Nguyen Phi Thoan’s durian garden located in Phu My area, Thuong Thanh ward, Cai Rang district is bustling with buyers and sellers. Mr. Thoan is known as one of the gardeners with a “lucky hand” with off-season durian.
Mr. Thoan's garden has a total area of 15,000m2 , grows about 140 Ri 6 durian trees and specializes in off-season planting.
In the first batch, Mr. Thoan harvested about 40 trees (4 years old), an area of 3,000m2 , with a yield of about 4 tons. The remaining area (trees over 10 years old) will continue to be harvested in the coming days, with an expected yield of about 25 tons.
With the purchase price at the garden of 80,000 VND/kg, after deducting all expenses, he earned a profit of about 220 million VND.
Mr. Thoan said that although getting durian trees to bear fruit “at will” has a good selling price, it requires high technique. Normally, Mr. Thoan starts to process the off-season flowering from the full moon of the 7th lunar month of the previous year and harvests by the 2nd lunar month of the following year.
Thanks to his experience and proper care, Mr. Thoan's off-season durians produce round, even fruit with quality flesh, so many traders come to inquire about buying them early.
The purchasing team "visits" durian by tapping on each fruit.
And proceed to check the quality of durian rice.
Durian is gathered into large piles, ready to be loaded onto trucks and transported to the warehouse for sale.
