Ms. VHM (27 years old, Thai Binh) had breast augmentation in 2018 at a cosmetic facility in Hanoi. During her third pregnancy, Ms. M. felt pain in her left breast.
When Ms. M. went for a pregnancy check-up at 32 weeks, the doctor performed an ultrasound on her chest and discovered a ruptured implant. Immediately after that, the patient went to Hoe Nhai General Hospital (Hanoi) for examination and removal of the implant.
Master, Doctor Nguyen Minh Nghia, in charge of the Department of Cosmetic Surgery, Hoe Nhai General Hospital (Hanoi) said that the female patient came to the clinic in a state of panic and anxiety because she was afraid of affecting the fetus.
However, the fetus is still small so the doctor advised not to perform surgery and wait until after birth to perform surgery to repair and remove the old breast implant.
At the 36th week of pregnancy, the patient and her family decided to have an active cesarean section and were prescribed medication to stop lactation in order to quickly remove the breast implants.
The team of doctors removed the ruptured bag, peeled off the entire fibrous capsule formed by the inflammation process and replaced it with a new bag to meet aesthetic needs. Currently, the patient has recovered well, the surgical wound has healed, and his psychology is stable.
Dr. Nghia said that the case of a ruptured breast implant during pregnancy is rare. Luckily, the patient had breast augmentation under the pectoralis major muscle and the rupture occurred in the fibrous capsule, preventing the gel from spreading to the surrounding tissues, but the fibrous capsule was thick and hard, causing pain.
Causes of rupture include sharp objects (sewing needles, syringes, knives) or strong external forces if the breast implant is of poor quality. If a ruptured breast implant is not detected and treated early, the accumulated fluid can lead to inflammatory reactions, widespread infection, causing breast deformation, requiring long-term treatment.
Therefore, doctors recommend that those who have breast implants should have an examination and check-up if there are any unusual signs such as swelling, pain, tension, or breast deformity.
