American 21-year-old tennis player Arthur Cazaux collapsed on the court in the third set of his match against compatriot Harold Mayot in the first qualifying round of the 2024 Miami Open on March 18.
The video shows Cazaux leaning on his left thigh and falling to the ground, motionless, as Mayot prepares to serve. A doctor rushes to provide first aid and the referee steps down from his chair to check on Cazaux.
Cazaux fainted in the third set of the Mayot match on March 18.
The 21-year-old was then taken off the court in a wheelchair, unable to continue, and Mayot was awarded the victory. The score was 1-1, with Mayot winning the first set 6-4, followed by Cazaux winning the second set 7-5. Mayot will face Belgian David Goffin in the next round.
It is not yet clear what caused Cazaux to faint in the middle of the field. On March 18, the temperature in Miami was 31 degrees Celsius with humidity around 70%.
On social media, Mayot responded to criticism that he did not act quickly enough to help Cazaux. Mayot thought his compatriot had collapsed due to cramps, and immediately went to check on him when he realized the problem was serious. The 22-year-old stressed that he did his best to help and wished Cazaux a speedy recovery. "People need to stop sending negative messages. Stop being so inflammatory," he wrote. "There is nothing but great friendship between us and always will be."
Medical staff treated Cazaux on the pitch before he retired.
Cazaux, born in 2002, reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and the second round of the 2024 Dubai Championship. He is currently ranked 74th on the ATP rankings - the best position of his career.
The 2024 Miami Open will take place from March 19 to 31. Two days before the draw, world number one Novak Djokovic withdrew from the second Masters 1000 event of the year, citing "the need to balance my personal and professional schedule." Djokovic is a record six-time Miami Open champion, but has not played in the tournament since 2019.
In the women's event, Emma Raducanu also withdrew due to a back injury. Raducanu made a splash by lifting the 2021 US Open title without dropping a set. She became the first player to qualify and win a Grand Slam in the Open era, and the first British player to win the US Open women's singles in more than half a century, but has since declined.
