Central Japan Railway Company (JR Tokai) announced that it has successfully tested the self-driving system with Shinkansen bullet trains in front of the media.
The train driver does not need to control the train. |
The train ran at speed on an 80km route between Hamamatsu and Shizuoka stations. The system allowed the driver to simply push a button and the train would head to its destination, without any human intervention. The test resulted in the train arriving at Shizuoka station just two seconds behind schedule and stopping less than a centimeter from its designated stop.
JR Tokai aims to start using the technology around 2028 to increase operational efficiency. Other Shinkansen operators are also testing autonomous trains, including East Japan Railway Company, which plans to introduce driverless trains on the Joetsu Shinkansen line in the mid-2030s.
