On January 4, Quang Ngai Maritime Port Authority coordinated with the Border Guard Command of Quang Ngai and Quang Nam provinces and relevant agencies to discuss, assess and approve the plan to rescue the cargo ship New Energy.
The 15,000-ton ship ran aground in Dung Quat waters, bordering Quang Ngai and Quang Nam provinces.
At the meeting, after listening to the ship owner's representative present the idea, the functional units agreed on a plan to rescue the cargo ship by using mechanical means to dig and suck sand from the area around the ship in distress, creating a channel deep enough for the ship to float and turn toward the sea.

After ensuring the above conditions, a tugboat will be used, combined with a cable winch, to pull the ship out of the stranded sand area and tow it to the designated location.
Currently, there are about 27 tons of FO oil on board the New Energy ship. To prevent environmental incidents, the Quang Ngai Maritime Port Authority and coordinating units require the ship owner and the salvage unit to mobilize adequate equipment and human resources to be ready to respond to oil spills and take measures to prevent fires and explosions, prevent natural disasters, etc.
Previously, on November 14, 2023, the New Energy ship, owned by Vinashin Ocean Transport One Member Co., Ltd. (160m long, 22m wide, 15,000 tons) was transporting 13,895 tons of iron ore from Cua Lo port (Nghe An) to Dung Quat port (Quang Ngai). After unloading the cargo, the captain maneuvered the ship to anchor in the waters of Dung Quat seaport when it was washed ashore by waves.
Since the ship ran aground, the ship owner has repeatedly proposed towing and rescuing the ship but has been unsuccessful. Up to now, the ship owner continues to submit a rescue plan to the authorities.
