Bathing after playing sports - a habit that can easily cause stroke

VnExpressVnExpress06/03/2024

Bathing immediately after playing sports, whether in cold or hot water, increases pressure on the body, which can lead to stroke and heart attack.

Dr. Doan Du Manh, a member of the Vietnam Vascular Disease Association, said that physical activity and sports bring many health benefits, including improving muscle strength, increasing resistance and improving mood. A common habit that many people often have is bathing immediately after physical activity to feel refreshed and comfortable. However, scientific studies show that this action can bring many health risks, potentially leading to a stroke.

During physical activity, the body undergoes a series of physiological changes, including increased blood circulation and heart rate to provide energy, oxygen, and nutrients to working muscles. Taking a cold shower can cause a sudden drop in body temperature, leading to strong constriction of arteries and veins, increasing pressure on the cardiovascular system. This increases the risk of stroke and heart attack, especially in people with a history of cardiovascular disease.

Hot baths also pose many risks, increasing the pressure on the body. When you are physically active, the body develops a natural mechanism to regulate blood pressure. However, continuing to increase the pressure on the body through hot baths can cause an imbalance in blood pressure, leading to dangerous conditions such as hypertensive crisis, increasing the risk of stroke and heart attack.

"The body needs time to return to normal after completing physical activity. Bathing, whether cold or hot, immediately after exercise can increase the risk of heart attack because the body does not have enough time to adapt," the doctor said.

In addition to the cardiovascular risks, showering immediately after playing sports can also negatively impact your muscles, causing muscle injuries. In fact, muscles in a state of intense exercise become more flexible and more susceptible to strain. Showering immediately after exercise can cause your muscles to contract suddenly, leading to a higher risk of injuries such as cramps or sprains.

Doctors note that after exercise, you need to cool down before leaving the gym with low-intensity stretching movements. This is very important if you want your body to return to a resting state, helping to normalize your heart rate and body temperature. The ideal time to shower is when your body has rested for about 20-30 minutes and stopped sweating. During this time, you can drink water to compensate for the water lost during exercise.

Bathing after the body has rested has many benefits, such as helping to restore and increase muscle endurance for the following workouts, removing bacteria on the skin, avoiding clogged pores, and improving immunity.

Initially, you should bathe with warm water and then gradually reduce the temperature. In case you cannot bathe, you can use a dry and clean towel to cover your body to absorb sweat, avoid clogging pores, then change your workout clothes into cool, loose clothes, and wait until you can bathe.
