(CLO) Syria announced that it has reached an agreement with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to integrate this force into state institutions.
The announcement was made on Monday (March 10) and was accompanied by images of a signing ceremony between Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi.

The agreement emphasizes the unity of Syria and stipulates that "all civil and military authorities in northeastern Syria" will be integrated "into the administration of the Syrian state, including border crossings, airports, and oil and gas fields".
The US-backed SDF has controlled a semi-autonomous area in northeastern Syria since 2015. The deal, if implemented, would bring that territory under full control of the Syrian central government.
This is one of the most significant developments since former President Bashar al-Assad was overthrown by Syrian opposition forces led by al-Sharaa last December.
The deal includes a Syria-wide ceasefire and support for the SDF in fighting pro-Assad fighters. It also affirms that the Kurds are an integral part of Syria and have guaranteed citizenship and constitutional rights.
It is not yet clear what the exact constitutional status of the SDF-controlled territory will be, and whether it will retain some autonomy. However, in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country like Syria, there will likely be calls for special status for other groups.
