SELF-RELIANCE
It can be seen that in the whole country, there is no place with a large number of socialized theater forces like in Ho Chi Minh City. Units with stable and regular weekly performance venues include Hoang Thai Thanh, Small Stage Theater 5B, The Gioi Tre, IDECAF Theater, Thanh Nien Theater, Hong Van Theater, Truong Hung Minh Theater, Ban Mai, Quoc Thao, Trinh Kim Chi, and Xuan Trang's Xom Kich. In addition, there are small cafe theaters such as Hong Trang's Kich Doi group, Huynh Lap's Tia Lia group... or People's Artist Hoang Yen's The Gioi Tre Theater, which specializes in performing school theater for students...
The theater world of Ho Chi Minh City is so vibrant but does not rely on the budget, even the big theaters operating still pay taxes to the state.
People's Artist Giang Manh Ha, Vice President of the Vietnam Stage Artists Association, a member of the festival's jury, said: "From there, the question arises why Ho Chi Minh City can do it while other localities cannot, or if they can, they are weak? I think, first of all, it is because the temperament of Ho Chi Minh City's people is always dynamic and creative. When there is an opportunity to expand and be comfortable, they will promote their latent strength. People are the deciding factor. Good seeds placed in suitable soil will grow very strongly. Perhaps the bloodline of "opening up the land" has been passed down for generations, so Ho Chi Minh City artists like to be independent, opening their own stage; even though they have to work hard to build, they still prefer it to passively waiting."
Multidimensional diversity
The inner strength of Ho Chi Minh City's stage is also shown in the fact that it is not stereotyped or monotonous, but each person has their own style, creating a rich and diverse flower garden.
Writer Thu Phuong, also a member of the festival's jury, commented: "After just half a month, we can see the overall picture of Ho Chi Minh City's stage, like a flower garden of all kinds of colors, with no shortage of topics, from history to horror, psychology, society, love, marriage, gender, children... and staged in all styles. Ho Chi Minh City's stage is full of the breath of life, reflecting all aspects of the people, audiences coming to the theater can find themselves or their loved ones in the plays."
To do that, People's Artist Giang Manh Ha explained: "Because Ho Chi Minh City artists do not have any barriers or stereotypes, they can develop their own unique features, and many unique features come together to create a colorful flower garden. And artists have a bridge connecting with the audience, knowing what the audience needs, saying only what the audience needs. Moreover, the way of speaking is not empty, sincere but profound, simple but penetrating the hearts of the audience. Honesty and simplicity are also an inner strength, not just being dramatic and noisy to be strong".
AUDIENCE IS ALSO A STRENGTH
The festival lasted for more than half a month with nearly 30 plays scheduled to be performed every day, many days even 2 shows, but the theater was still packed with audiences, whether it was evening or noon. The applause resounded in the auditorium, the "screams" of encouragement, the laughter, the tears... made the artists on stage even more excited to perform. Those were unforgettable impressions.
Even the weekly shows attracted large audiences and were enthusiastically received. The audience consisted of all ages, seniors, middle-aged, young people, and some even traveled from the provinces to watch, or from far away districts such as Cu Chi, Hoc Mon...
People's Artist Hong Van said: "The stage exists thanks to the support of the audience. They love art, love artists, and give us energy to do our job."
People's Artist Hoang Yen also confided: "We specialize in performing for schools, and it is that young audience that has kept the hearts of us artists. The young children who watch historical plays are surprisingly serious, and even write touching reviews. They are truly the future generation of audiences that will help the theater survive."
As students of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Cinema, Thanh Xuan and Gia Han were excited to watch the plays at the festival. Thanh Xuan said: "I study Cai Luong, but I learned a lot through the plays. Not only is it useful for my acting career, but it also teaches me other things." Meanwhile, Gia Han shared: "I study acting. I learned many good things about directing, design, music... in addition to moral lessons that are very necessary for the young generation."
Ms. Le Thi Nhi, a 52-year-old audience member living in Go Vap District, said: "I have watched many plays on many stages. I have found many useful messages for myself in life and behavior. The stage is not only for entertainment, but also has a very high educational value."
