(Dan Tri) - A video of a little girl in Thai Nguyen obediently giving lucky money to her mother with a "distracted face" and an expression "sad as if about to cry" has taken social media by storm.
On February 1 (the 4th day of Tet), the family of Mr. Nguyen Duy Vu (31 years old, in Thai Nguyen) went to wish their relatives a happy new year. In the moment of family reunion, he unexpectedly captured a lovely moment of his niece, nicknamed Suty (5 years old).
In the video, the little girl with a "distracted face" takes out each lucky money note and gives it to her mother, making the whole family laugh.
The video, which only lasts 13 seconds, quickly took social media by storm, attracting nearly 2.5 million views and hundreds of thousands of likes and comments. The girl's regretful expression amused netizens.
"The lovely girl looked like she was about to cry when she gave her mother lucky money," wrote account Nguyen Ha.
"My mother is different. When I was little, she let me put all my lucky money in the piggy bank without asking me to pay a single cent," user Nguyen Thanh recalls.
Mr. Duy Vu expressed surprise when the family story attracted the attention and interest of the online community. He said that his original intention was to post the video on his personal page to preserve memories, so that his niece could watch it again later.
According to Mr. Vu, Suty's "distracted face" was because she was sulking with her mother, not because she was forced to pay lucky money. The girl asked her mother to count and put away the money, her adorable expression made everyone in the family laugh.
"After going on a spring outing, the baby was happy again," he said.
Speaking with Dan Tri reporter, Associate Professor Dr. Le Quy Duc, former Deputy Director of the Institute of Culture and Development, Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, said that the custom of giving lucky money at the beginning of the year is an indispensable part of Vietnamese culture every Tet holiday.
Lucky money is a symbol of luck, peace and happiness, something that everyone wants to have on the first day of the new year.
Lucky money envelopes are usually red - the color of luck, with money inside. Putting lucky money in an envelope shows discretion, helps people not to compare, and avoids unnecessary conflicts.
"During Tet, we often give lucky money to the elderly, children, and friends as a New Year's greeting," the expert said.
In fact, there was once a controversial opinion about "abandoning the custom of giving lucky money". Associate Professor, Dr. Le Quy Duc said that we should not lose a good custom and tradition every traditional Tet holiday like giving lucky money.
Importantly, adults should recognize its true meaning, returning to the inherent beauty of lucky money to make Tet holidays more enjoyable. Parents should guide their children on how to use lucky money properly, so that children understand the true meaning of this custom and are aware of their own responsibilities.
Mr. Tran Hai Nguyen, Director of a life skills training unit in Ho Chi Minh City, said parents should educate children about the meaning and civilized and polite way to receive lucky money.
Parents also need to listen to their children’s opinions and plans for how to use their lucky money. Parents can suggest that their children give part of their lucky money to their grandparents or someone they love or to do charity work.
With the remaining money, parents advise their children to divide it into several parts. One part of the money can be used to satisfy their wishes, such as buying toys, valuable items (phones, computers, bicycles, traveling...). The remaining part can be saved in a piggy bank or sent to parents as a savings book.
"When parents guide their children on how to use lucky money, it will help them see that what they do has a clearer purpose and brings more value," said Mr. Nguyen.
Experts advise parents to teach their children to use lucky money effectively and to be worthy of the affection that adults give them. Then, children will also know how to appreciate the meaning of lucky money.
