Hawaii Governor Josh Green said in an interview with CNN that the death toll from last month's wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui has dropped from 115 to 97. He also said the number of people missing is now 31, down from 66 last week.

“The death toll is down because we have Department of Defense anthropologists who can do a lot of advanced genetic research. They can make sure we don’t declare the wrong person dead and don’t destroy the hope of these families,” Mr. Green said.
The fire broke out on August 8. The wildfire spread down the volcano’s base toward the resort town of Lahaina, destroying or damaging about 2,200 buildings and causing billions of dollars in damage. Many residents jumped into the sea to escape the intense flames.
