The HCM City National University Dormitory Management Center has just conducted a survey on the bus usage needs of more than 18,000 boarding students. Accordingly, 34.94% of students have a need to travel by bus, with the most destinations being the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (24%), the University of Technology (21.12%), the University of Natural Sciences (17.89%) and the University of Economics and Law (14.9%).
Most students think that the placement of bus stops on the routes is unreasonable, many stops do not have shelters, signs, etc. Besides, some female students are still afraid to travel by bus because of the situation of bad guys mingling to pickpocket and harass.
Nguyen Minh Tam, a student at the University of Natural Sciences, said that jostling, pushing, and not lining up when getting on the bus still happens regularly, not just during rush hour.
"Some students (both male and female) still do not have much self-awareness in giving up their seats to the elderly, the disabled or pregnant women. They assume that if they get on the bus first, they will have a seat. Only when people around them speak up will students give up their seats" - Tam shared.

Nearly half of the surveyed students expressed their desire to have an internal bus route within the HCM City National University urban area for convenient travel. Students said that bus trips should start earlier, from 5am and end later, around 10-11pm; the interval between two trips during rush hours should be shortened by 3-5 minutes/trip, and the fare should be 3,000 VND/trip.
Associate Professor - Dr. Vu Hai Quan, Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University, said that although there are more than 8,000 students from Binh Duong and Dong Nai studying at Ho Chi Minh City National University. However, there is still no bus route from these two localities to Ho Chi Minh City National University. If there is a bus route connecting to the Ho Chi Minh City National University urban area and is subsidized, it will solve the travel needs of many students in these two localities.
According to the leaders of VNU-HCM, investing in internal bus routes covering all units in urban areas is very necessary, meeting the travel needs of students. This will create a habit of using public transport among students, contributing to reducing environmental pollution and traffic accidents.
