According to the Singapore Tourism Board, A-list entertainment star shows in 2024 have significantly boosted Singapore's tourism industry and economy.
Tourism industry statistics show that the Singapore Sports Hub attracted more than one million visitors in the first quarter of 2024, far exceeding the 700,000 visitors achieved in the second half of 2023.
In particular, some big shows have attracted around 840,000 visitors, such as concerts by Coldplay and Mayday in January, Ed Sheeran in February and Taylor Swift all held at the 55,000-capacity National Stadium.
This positive development has led to strong growth in hotel occupancy rates and retail sales.
The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) said the shows have contributed to the growth of the tourism industry, with revenue potentially reaching between SGD350 million and SGD450 million, according to estimates by some private sector analysts.
Singapore plans to capitalize on this momentum to maintain its competitive edge in the music tourism market. Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong highlighted music tourism as a promising sector as artists are expected to tour more due to the shift in revenue from streaming services.
To continue to maintain its advantage, the Singapore Tourism Board plans to continue organizing similar-sized shows in the future, while focusing on upgrading its infrastructure system.
Amid a boom in concert venues across Asia, such as Hong Kong's Kai Tak Sports Park and the Bangkok Arena, Singapore will replace the 12,000-seat Singapore Indoor Stadium with a world-class venue.
With safe and comprehensive infrastructure, and many supportive policies from the government, Singapore remains a top destination for music tourism.
Amid increasingly fierce competition, Singapore said it will diversify its events and facilities to increase competitiveness and consider this a strategic vision for future tourism development.
"In addition to spectacular shows, we will continue to maintain our position as an attractive destination through organizing a variety of other exciting events, including major sporting events and cultural festivals," said a representative of the Singapore Tourism Board.
As of June 30, the total number of international visitors to Singapore reached 8.24 million, with about 197,410 visitors from Vietnam.
