'Will get good result against India'

Coach Kim Sang-sik: Must strive to achieve good results

The Vietnamese team will face India in a match taking place at 6 p.m. on October 12 at Thien Truong Stadium. This is the last match for coach Kim Sang-sik and his team before entering the AFF Cup 2024.

Although the results have not been good recently, with 3 defeats in the last 5 matches, Mr. Kim Sang-sik is still confident that his students will improve.

“The Vietnamese team has conceded at least two goals in each of the last six matches. In the match against India, we did not change much in defense. However, if the whole team plays together as a unified unit, we will have a positive result. With what I am doing with the Vietnamese team, the whole team will have a good result against India,” coach Kim Sang-sik affirmed.

The 3-2 victory over Nam Dinh FC in a friendly match on October 9 helped coach Kim Sang-sik break a three-match losing streak, thereby relieving some of the pressure. However, to achieve the goal of reaching the final of the AFF Cup 2024, the Korean coach still has a lot of work to do.

He shared: “Actually, I am not too worried, as the match with India is also the last match before the AFF Cup. Recently, the players have been in good physical condition and have prepared thoroughly for the important stage. I believe the Vietnamese team will have good results.”

The Vietnamese team defeated India, the last time the two teams competed at Thong Nhat Stadium in September 2022. The 3-0 victory over India helped coach Park Hang-seo and his team win the international friendly tournament in Ho Chi Minh City.

Coach Kim Sang-sik and his team are urgently preparing for the final friendly match before the AFF Cup.

After 2 years, the Vietnamese team is having problems with form when losing 10 of the last 13 matches. Nguyen Quang Hai and his teammates stopped in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, finishing third in a group with Iraq, Indonesia and the Philippines. India also could not enter the third qualifying round when finishing behind Qatar and Kuwait in the competition.

Both mainstays Nguyen Tien Linh and Bui Hoang Viet Anh are practicing separately and cannot participate in the friendly match with Nam Dinh due to injury.

While Tien Linh has a back problem, Viet Anh has a relapse of knee pain (which he had at the end of September), right after returning to wear the Hanoi Police Club shirt in the 1-0 win against Binh Duong.

However, coach Kim Sang-sik emphasized: "Tien Linh and Viet Anh have some injury problems, but even though they cannot complete 100% of the training plan like the whole team, that will not affect their performance in the match against India."

The Vietnamese team has 9 young players in the October training session, including Nguyen Van Viet, Tran Trung Kien, Giap Tuan Duong, Nguyen Dinh Bac, Nguyen Van Truong, Bui Vi Hao, Khuat Van Khang, Nguyen Thai Son, Nguyen Quoc Viet. Coach Kim Sang-sik also called back veterans, such as midfielder Nguyen Van Quyet.

According to Mr. Kim, the young and veteran players are having a good connection. “I have watched the players’ performance in many matches and realized that the Vietnamese team needs new energy. The good news is that experienced players like Van Quyet or young players like Dinh Bac are having a good connection with the whole team. I believe this connection will be more sustainable in the future.”

The Korean strategist added: “Tomorrow, we will play at Thien Truong Stadium. Hopefully, the fans will come to the stadium in large numbers and the Vietnamese team will try to give the best match. I am doing everything I can to create motivation for the players. Hopefully, the whole team will bring joy to the fans.”
