When a country promotes the creative industry, it not only creates direct economic value but also helps to enhance its image, increase its global presence and express its distinct cultural identity. Exploiting creative resources from fields such as art, design, music, film, fashion and technology can help increase the quality of life of its people, attract international tourists and investors.


Creative economy is a field in which many countries and cities around the world have been very successful. Most of the world's leading economies are very strong in creative economy. New York (USA) is a typical example of a strong creative city, where creativity not only promotes cultural development but also contributes significantly to economic development. This city has a rich ecosystem, where ideas, endless creative inspiration, innovation and experimentation are freely developed in many fields, from art to technology, from culture to economy.

In terms of art and culture, thousands of museums, galleries, theaters and major art events such as the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, along with events such as New York Fashion Week or Broadway have helped the city affirm its role as the creative capital of the world.

In terms of design and architecture, New York is a gathering place for architects, designers, and major creative companies, with notable architectural works such as: Empire State Building, One World Trade Center or The Vessel.

New York City is also a hub for the creative technology industry with a thriving tech scene and innovative startups, where technology ideas, apps, games, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) are tested and developed. Home to musical cultures such as Jazz, Hip-hop, New York creates a creative community where artists can showcase their talents and build their careers.

New York is also the setting for countless Hollywood films, from iconic productions to popular entertainment. The city is not just a filming location, but also a “living character” that plays an important role in creating the atmosphere, emotions and themes of the films.

Vietnam has a very long history and culture with heroic traditions of building and defending the country, which are values ​​that not every country or ethnic group has. We can completely turn heritage into assets to build the Vietnamese national brand as well as promote creativity to increase economic strength. When creativity is combined with cultural, historical and technological factors, the national brand will have strong appeal and create a difference. Vietnam has been recognized by UNESCO as Hanoi, Da Lat and Hoi An as creative cities in the UNESCO Global Creative Cities Network (UCCN).

Ho Chi Minh City is making great efforts and setting a goal in the Cultural Industry Development Project by 2030 to strive to become a creative city under the UCCN. However, choosing which creative city among the 7 fields (crafts and folk arts, design, cinema, cuisine, literature, media arts and music) is a difficult problem to solve. And what will be the difference between Ho Chi Minh City's creativity and other cities in Vietnam as well as major cities in the world, to contribute to building the city brand, the national brand of Vietnam?

Humane Creation

Humane creativity, creativity that tells sustainable stories will be a potential direction to make a difference for Ho Chi Minh City in particular and other creative cities in Vietnam in general. Humane creativity is solving social and human problems effectively and on a large scale, contributing to making the world a better place. This is not only the role of individuals or organizations, but requires creative cooperation from the whole community. To realize this, we can apply the 5T model: Curiosity, Empathy, Ideation, Testing and Scaled Deployment. This is a closed loop, constantly operating and developing.

A typical example of humane creativity that helps create a difference and elevate the national brand is the lesson of the Korean National Brand. Through creativity in many fields such as K-pop, cinema, art, design, etc., Korea has built a strong brand story and affirmed its international position. Looking at Korea's creative cities, we see stories in all fields that solve social problems and aim for sustainability. Films such as "Parasite" and "It's Okay To Not Be Okay" not only bring entertainment value but also speak strongly about social issues such as gender equality, domestic violence, and class division. From there, encourage positive changes to build a more equal and humane community. The application of design and innovation in developing products such as Samsung, LG… is not only a supporting tool but also brings many meaningful values ​​to human life, from improving convenience, improving labor productivity, to contributing to promoting connection and sustainable development.

Exploiting the element of Humanistic Creativity

Ho Chi Minh City can fully utilize the humanistic creativity factor, telling stories to create sustainable development for Vietnam. Because, similar to New York, Ho Chi Minh City has many advantages when owning a young, dynamic, creative and enthusiastic community. This is also an important economic, cultural and social center of Vietnam and the region.

Some activities that Ho Chi Minh City can implement are developing the cultural industry: Investing in cinema, music and art with content that solves social problems, creates inspiration and sustainable values; Integrating technology with human factors, promoting technological initiatives to improve people's quality of life, such as smart transportation, green cities and technological products that help solve environmental problems; Building a creative community aiming to connect and support artists and businesses to tell the story of a sustainable and humane Ho Chi Minh City.
