(PLVN) - In 2024, for the first time, the "Excellent Cultural Manager" award was presented to the Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Hai Phong - Dr. Tran Thi Hoang Mai, who played an important role in making Hai Phong a bright spot in culture and sports of the country, affirming it as a major cultural center of the Northern Delta.

First recipient of Outstanding Cultural Manager award

After many “dates”, we finally had a conversation with Dr. Hoang Mai during the busy last days of the year. When asked about the award being on the list for the first time, she said she was completely surprised and excited.

This is an award that has been held annually since 2005. This award is the Dao Tan award for individuals and groups with outstanding contributions - unceasing creativity in the work of preserving and promoting national culture, covering many fields of culture, art...

Although she has been away from the spotlight for a long time, Dr. Hoang Mai is still remembered by the audience with the affectionate name "Mai Cheo", enough for us to know that her mark on Cheo has been so memorable. Dr. Tran Thi Hoang Mai was born in 1976, she retains the charm, charm and sharpness typical of women in Hai Phong. She said that no one in her family is in the arts, her parents are both civil servants, but from a very young age, watching Cheo plays in the countryside, little Mai grew up with the dream of standing under the spotlight. At the age of 18, she entered the Hai Phong High School of Culture and Arts (VH-NT), then worked at the Hai Phong Cheo Troupe.

Hoang Mai came to the National Cheo Theatre Festival in 2005 and won the third prize for young talent. In 2003, she took the entrance exam to the Vietnam Academy of Theatre and Cinema. Before graduating, Hoang Mai had already "acquired" her first work. When the Vietnam Stage Artists Association urgently announced the Young Directors' Festival, Hoang Mai immediately began staging and directing a work filled with Vietnamese folk flavors: Betel and Areca. After the Hai Phong Cheo Troupe performed at the City Theater, the performance Betel and Areca won the second prize at the National Young Talents Festival for Stage Directors in 2007...

In addition, she is also a small screen actress in dozens of different long and short films and a stage director. And then, after 5 years of burning herself out with her roles, she moved to a management role, 10 years as Head of the Hai Phong Cheo Troupe, 9 years as Deputy Director of the Department of Culture - Sports (VH-TT) of Hai Phong City, and then to her current position as the head of the VH-TT sector, she has had spectacular breakthroughs in all of them.

She shared: “ For me, art is the constant desire to create, to try and contribute. From the manager of the Hai Phong Cheo Troupe to now the Director of the Hai Phong Department of Culture and Sports, in any position, when there is a role, I eagerly participate. In addition to experience, I think many other qualities are needed, but above all, love for the profession and sacrifice for that love, as well as passion and desire to commit.”

It can be said that in recent years, the Port City has left its mark as a leader in the country in terms of culture and heritage. These are the bright stages, the big festivals, the awakened heritage areas…

She recalled that at the time when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out and spread globally, the performing arts, especially traditional theatre, were quiet, so the Hai Phong cultural sector started implementing the "Hai Phong Television Stage" project.

At first, she was concerned and wanted to do something to revive the stage with television stage programs. And then, every month, plays of many art forms from cheo, cai luong, drama, to music and dance and puppetry... were staged and invested in by Hai Phong's professional team in conjunction with art troupes across the country. Since the project was implemented, Hai Phong has performed about 50 plays in the form of live performances combined with recording and broadcasting on television and online platforms to serve people in remote areas, border areas, islands...

From the success of the Television Stage, in July 2023, Hai Phong continued to implement the plan to Light Up the City Theater every Saturday and Sunday evening, performing art programs, classic and unique plays from the world and Vietnam, in many art forms, performed by art units of the city, the Central Government and other provinces and cities... The efforts to light up Hai Phong's stage have contributed to improving the cultural and spiritual life of the city's people, especially those on the islands.

Dr. Tran Thi Hoang Mai shared that Hai Phong, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City all have Opera Houses - cultural works with unique architecture and a history of more than 100 years. "We want the City Opera House to be a performance venue for artists not only from Hai Phong but also from the whole country and internationally. So that the theater is not only a tourist destination but also a place to maintain periodically, a familiar meeting place for audiences and visitors to enjoy works of art every Saturday and Sunday."

The city has many heritages, spreading brilliantly

Dr. Tran Thi Hoang Mai said that in 2024, the Department of Culture and Sports will be one of the key units implementing many important tasks of the city on developing culture and sports, especially organizing the Red Flamboyant Festival and communicating the value of the world natural heritage of Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba archipelago.

Red Flamboyant Festival - An annual, unique festival that has become a trademark of Hai Phong. A completely new look with the 11th time of organization has brought a new experience to the people and domestic and international tourists.

For the first time, the Festival was held on the largest scale ever at the Square of the North Song Cam New Urban Area, Thuy Nguyen District (now Thuy Nguyen New City). A new space, a new symbol of the city's future development was present in the festival night with elaborate and eye-catching art performances. The Red Flamboyant Festival is an event that has appeared many times in the BSI Top 10 Events ranking of Buzzmetrics, in 2024 it was voted the 3rd most outstanding event on Social Media in May...

At the same time, for the first time, Cat Ba archipelago was broadcast on CNN Asia in many different programs such as The Lead, First Move, CNN News room... to introduce and promote the outstanding global value of the heritage, bringing visitors new discoveries. This communication activity contributes to promoting the development orientation of Cat Ba tourism in a green, sustainable direction, ensuring the value and integrity of the heritage.

Another event that multiplies the pride of every Hai Phong citizen is the city's symbol. After 32 years of searching, in January 2024, the NTM 787 design with red phoenix flowers and ocean waves was selected. The overall logo creates a ship sailing the sea, carrying historical and cultural values with the meaning of development, modernity, dynamism, creativity and affection in the dawn.

At the same time, the work of preserving and promoting the value of cultural heritage has yielded "sweet fruit", according to Dr. Tran Thi Hoang Mai: Hai Phong has built 02 dossiers of the historical relic of Tu Luong Xam area - the headquarters of Ngo Quyen in 938 and the relic cluster related to the Mac dynasty, submitted to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, proposing the Prime Minister to rank it as a special national relic. Building and submitting to all levels the dossier to propose the recognition of national treasures for the set of gold artifacts at Nghe Temple... Establishing a directory of documents and artifacts related to Trang Trinh Nguyen Binh Khiem in 2024 and the scientific conference "Cultural celebrity Nguyen Binh Khiem in national history" in Hai Phong in 2024... For the first time, 18 national treasures and a set of gold and silver artifacts in the sanctuary of Nghe Temple are displayed at Hai Phong Museum. And in the first days of this new year, the set of gold products offered to female general Le Chan at Nghe Temple has been recognized as a National Treasure.

Talking about the development of cultural industry, Dr. Hoang Mai shared that cultural activities themselves do not directly generate profits but are the foundation and driving force for economic development, most notably tourism.

An artifact in the set of gold artifacts offered to Female General Le Chan at Nghe Temple has just been recognized as a National Treasure.

With the view that culture is a type of resource, cultural industry is the application of technology, organization of exploitation of that resource to serve development, Hai Phong has been focusing on exploiting the rich cultural tradition of the coastal land - which possesses abundant cultural heritage resources with nearly 1,000 historical and cultural relics. Including Cat Ba archipelago World Natural Heritage, 2 special national relics, 117 national relics and 435 city-level relics.

Hai Phong also has more than 400 festivals at all levels; 10 festivals and 1 folk performing art are included in the list of National Intangible Cultural Heritage; 2 cultural heritages are recognized by UNESCO as representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity and heritage in need of urgent protection... At the same time, the Port City also has 15 outstanding artisans in the field of intangible cultural heritage and a rich, unique, and long-standing system of craft villages that attract domestic and international tourists...

Talking to us, Dr. Hoang Mai affirmed more than once that heritage is not property but treasure. The Heritage Law truly comes into life when people join hands to preserve and promote heritage. Culture is the best things that remain in the long journey of development of a nation, a country. Therefore, cultural identity is a priceless treasure that every person living in Vietnam inherits.

Saying goodbye to the head of the coastal city's cultural sector before the New Year, we understand that it is the values that have existed for thousands of years that have connected Hai Phong people to their roots and are also the strength that has brought Hai Phong to reach out to the region and the world, joining the era of national growth.
