Phu Quoc International Airport was listed by Aviation A2Z - an Indian aviation information site - in the list of 10 fastest growing airports in Southeast Asia.
Phu Quoc has the highest growing airport in Southeast Asia
Recently, the prestigious Indian aviation information website Aviation A2Z announced the ranking results of “Top 10 fastest growing airports in Southeast Asia in January 2025”, in which Phu Quoc International Airport ranked 6th, surpassing Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat. Topping the list is Suvarnabhumi Airport (Thailand), second is Kuala Lumpur Airport (Malaysia), followed by Changi Airport (Singapore) - the busiest airports in Southeast Asia.
According to Aviation A2Z data, Phu Quoc International Airport recorded an impressive growth rate of 185.2%, equivalent to more than 108,000 additional seats, while other airports in the region only achieved an average growth rate of 10% - 16%. The highest growth rate in the region has contributed to reflecting the growing appeal of Phu Quoc as a leading tropical destination, while affirming the effectiveness of the visa exemption policy and cooperation strategy between airlines. The expansion of new routes and increased flight frequency have contributed to transforming Phu Quoc from an emerging destination to a leading tourist destination in the region.
The latest statistics from the People's Committee of Phu Quoc City show that from January 25 to February 2, 2025, Phu Quoc City welcomed 281,659 visitors, an increase of 47% over the same period. During the Lunar New Year, Phu Quoc welcomed 134 flights arriving and departing a day with about 22,000 visitors, including 40 international flights arriving/day, an increase of 3 times compared to last year. Phu Quoc currently welcomes visitors from more than 150 countries and territories, with an increasingly expanding international flight network. In addition to direct flights from Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, the pearl island also recorded many charter flights from Greece, UAE, Singapore, India, Russia, Japan, and Eastern European and Central Asian countries.
This impressive growth rate is the result of timely policies to welcome the wave of international tourists that Phu Quoc has implemented. Currently, the pearl island is the only destination in Vietnam that applies a superior visa exemption policy, allowing visitors from all over the world to stay for up to 30 days. In addition to this advantage, Phu Quoc is increasingly widely known thanks to its continuous "catching the eye" of international media, being honored in many prestigious rankings, such as the second most beautiful island in the world after Maldives voted by Travel + Leisure (USA), top 25 destinations in the world in 2025 voted by CNA (Singapore)... In particular, the ideal time to travel to Phu Quoc lasts from November to April, coinciding with the winter holidays, spring holidays and New Year's Eve of many countries, further increasing the attractiveness of the pearl island on the global tourism map.
According to Aviation A2Z, Southeast Asia’s aviation industry is experiencing record growth, with international capacity exploding at many airports, marking important milestones in the growth of these markets. From bustling hubs like Bangkok and Singapore to emerging destinations like Phu Quoc, data shows that Southeast Asia is capitalizing on rising travel demand, expanding its air network and enhancing strategic connectivity.
Growth comes with challenges
However, the impressive growth figures also bring many challenges to Phu Quoc. In the context of the tourism industry continuing to boom and the APEC 2027 milestone approaching, the need to upgrade the pearl island's aviation capacity becomes extremely urgent. The growth rate is also the driving force for Phu Quoc to continue expanding its market, attracting tourists from more countries.
In 2024, Phu Quoc airport served more than 4.1 million passengers (nearly 2 million international passengers), exceeding the current design capacity of 4 million passengers/year (3 million domestic passengers and 1 million international passengers), causing overload and congestion for many hours, especially in the immigration area, especially during the recent Tet holiday.
According to experts, the overloaded aviation infrastructure and poor services at the "gateway" of Phu Quoc tourist city will be a hindrance and bottleneck for the development of Phu Quoc, especially when this island has been chosen as the APEC 2027 destination, voted the second most beautiful island in the world, and its position is increasingly enhanced in the international arena.
