On March 14, 2025, Phu Quoc City became a first-class urban area under Kien Giang province, marking an important milestone in the development journey of the pearl island, from a pristine island district to a top tourist destination and an international-class island city.
The strong transformation of the pearl island
More than 20 years ago, Phu Quoc was still an island district surrounded by dense forests and red soil, the fishing villages around the island were still quite sparsely populated and had a low standard of living. On the largest island in Vietnam at that time, tourism also developed moderately with only about 55 accommodation establishments operating.
The important milestone that helped Phu Quoc from an unpolished rough gem to become the most attractive island on the planet was when the Prime Minister issued Decision 178 on October 5, 2004, approving the "Overall Project for the Development of Phu Quoc Island, Kien Giang Province to 2010 and Vision to 2020" towards becoming a high-quality, regional and international eco-tourism and resort center.
After 20 years since the project was implemented, Phu Quoc has achieved many important development milestones such as becoming a type II urban area on September 17, 2014. On March 14, 2025, Phu Quoc was officially recognized as a type I urban area under Kien Giang province at the announcement ceremony of Decision 199 of the Prime Minister.
Upgrading to a class I urban area is a solid launching pad for Phu Quoc island city in its journey of rapid development in the coming time.
As a leading tourist destination, Phu Quoc currently has 700 accommodation establishments with many projects reaching 4 and 5 star standards, surpassing many tourist cities in the region. The pearl island also welcomes up to 6 million visitors in 2024, including nearly 1 million international visitors.
In the field of investment, by the end of 2024, Phu Quoc City has attracted 274 tourism projects, accounting for 86% of the whole province.
Many transport and urban infrastructure projects have been upgraded and completed, such as Phu Quoc International Passenger Port, Phu Quoc International Airport expansion, An Thoi seaport, waste treatment projects, clean water supply, wastewater treatment, urban beautification, etc.
Along with that, Phu Quoc will build many projects to serve international events to prepare for hosting the APEC 2027 summit week.
Potential for breakthrough after the golden milestone
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit is considered an event that brings breakthrough opportunities to the host countries. In addition to the leaders of the countries, this event also attracts 20,000 - 40,000 businessmen, businesses, tourists... to the host locality during its duration. The Gyeongbuk Development Institute (South Korea, host of APEC 2025) estimates that the APEC event has brought in 97.2 billion won (670 million USD) and created more than 7,900 jobs for the locality.
