Saudi Arabia In a report to the Saudi League Disciplinary Board, Cristiano Ronaldo said that his gesture of waving his hand in front of his sensitive area was not intended to insult Al Shabab fans.
According to Ariyadhiah newspaper, Ronaldo sent a report to the Saudi League Disciplinary Board before the deadline of 11am on Wednesday, February 28, Riyadh time. In it, the captain of Al Nassr Club wrote: "I respect all clubs. My actions were to show strength and victory, not to offend anyone. We are used to expressing such emotions in Europe."
According to the newspaper, the league's Disciplinary Board has received a report from Ronaldo, as well as a complaint from Al Shabab. They will consider the case on a legal basis, before deciding whether to punish the Portuguese superstar or not. The decision will be made no later than Thursday, February 29, before Al Nassr plays the 22nd round of the Saudi League against Al Hazm that evening.
According to Article 57 of the Saudi Pro League Disciplinary and Ethics Code, if found guilty, Ronaldo will receive a two-match suspension and a fine of approximately $5,300.
On the evening of February 25, Ronaldo caused controversy with a gesture that was considered offensive after Al Nassr won 3-2 against Al Shabab in the 21st round of the Saudi League. In response to the chants of "Messi" from the stands, he turned to the audience, put his hand in front of the sensitive area below his hips, and then waved it forward continuously.
Ronaldo's actions have angered Saudi Arabian public opinion, and many sports figures have criticized the Portuguese captain. Former national team goalkeeper Mohamed Al-Deayea said: "What Ronaldo did was unethical and unacceptable. His recent actions are unworthy of a player who is considered a role model for many people to follow."
Former Al Shabab CEO Talal Al Sheikh also blamed the Saudi League Disciplinary Board for allowing Ronaldo to commit multiple violations without being punished. "This is the third time Ronaldo has behaved so shamefully without being punished," Al Sheikh added.
Ronaldo's actions reminded many people of the behavior of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez after winning the Golden Glove award at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He put his glove in front of his sensitive area right on the podium, and was criticized by many Qataris.
