Is it appropriate to give math test questions that make students cry so much?

* A secondary school math teacher in Ho Chi Minh City:

Students doubt themselves

Many students study day and night, trying hard for the exam. I am not defending the students, but the recent math exam for grade 10 made students doubt themselves, not knowing which direction to study is right.

Such math problems only encourage students to take extra classes. They are not sure about taking extra classes, but because they are not satisfied with one class, they take two classes to feel more secure.

With this math test, many students are "shocked" when reading it because many math teachers have headaches when reading it. This test has long sentences, like the words must be converted from literature to math and the math must be converted from literature. Like mathematical symbols but expressed in words.

The Department of Education and Training said that the math questions are somewhat practical, but in real life, it is very vast, and it is impossible for students and teachers to cover everything. Remember that this test is for students who are just starting grade 9, they do not have much practical experience and also approach reality at school differently from teachers.

In the first few years, when Ho Chi Minh City gave practical problems in the 10th grade admission, the department would focus on a certain field so that teachers could emphasize it to students, making them less confused. But now, they give practical problems that students in Ho Chi Minh City rarely encounter, so they are very confused. Plus, the questions are long, with two pages full of words, making students "terrified".

With the psychology of 9th graders, if they can't do one exercise, they panic, leading to not being able to do the other exercises. I feel sorry for the students, this kind of exercise puts a heavy burden on them. This year's 8th graders will probably just speed up their studies.

It must also be said that, due to changes in the times, students today surf TikTok a lot, they only read short things, and mainly watch short videos, so they read very little. When they encounter questions with many words and long expressions, they will be even more confused.

So through this year's math problem, I want to remind students to try hard in reading comprehension, to try to get used to reading long texts to understand the problems expressed in real language. With math problems like this, students need to practice literature as well to do well.

Change teaching methods to help students access better

I am a former math student at a specialized school in Ho Chi Minh City and a parent whose child is taking the 10th grade exam this year. Reading this math question, I found it challenging to solve each small question in an average of 12 minutes.

With such long exams that require students to spend time reasoning, they will not have enough time to solve all the problems. Even students who are good at math and have never done it before will have difficulty completing all these problems in 120 minutes.

I also monitor my child's learning and see that what he is learning at school really does not meet this math problem. So, these are math problems that our child has to have time to reason, so the time limit for the math problem is really not suitable.

On the other hand, I also think it is necessary to change the teaching method so that students can approach the problems better because this kind of problem setting will make our children confused and not know where to start learning the problem.

* A high school math teacher in Ho Chi Minh City:

Cannot innovate only in exam questions

If we compare the math exam for grade 10 in Ho Chi Minh City with the math exam for grade 10 in Hanoi, we will see that the math exam in Ho Chi Minh City has a much higher practical content. This caused many students to cry after the recent math exam.

We have to ask why Hanoi also recruits students like Ho Chi Minh City, but their math exam does not make students "cry out" like that, but they still achieve the goal of recruiting students to public 10th grade.

If there is another comparison, high school graduation exam students still achieve the goal of choosing to enter university and taking the graduation exam, but it does not have as much practical content as the HCMC math exam.

I am not afraid of innovation, but we must know that innovation must start with the way students learn, must prepare them mentally and must prepare teachers with appropriate teaching tools, and cannot only innovate in exam questions.

Because from this test, students only feel unconfident and confused. Is it worth making them cry so much? It is not that they do not study or work hard, but they have studied and worked hard but still feel confused when faced with such a strange test.

The students are just in grade 9 and this is their first big exam, and being doused with cold water like this can lead to psychological problems for them.

What do you think about the recent 10th grade math exam in Ho Chi Minh City as well as the way math is taught and learned in schools? Send your comments to [email protected].
